Some of you might remember an earlier thread of mine, discussing the damaged auto choke on my 66 C code coupe. I won’t go into the details here, but here is how I got on, making my own manual choke.

From the pics you can see that I’ve removed the bimetallic spring, the piston assembly and machined out some of the casting to get some space, then I’ve made a bellcrank from brass sheet to fit onto the shaft that the auto choke used to operate. The choke cable comes in at the bottom left of the picture, through a bicycle brake adjuster, and onto the new bellcrank. The first picture shows the choke on, the second shows it off.

I’ve fitted the knob assembly under the dash on the bracket used for the driver’s side fresh air door (the PO welded it up when repairing the cowl), the cable passes through the firewall above the gas pedal, via a ‘P’-clip on the intake to the choke housing, entering via the old stove-pipe entry (this was also mangled by the PO).

Initial observations are that it needs a spring to hold the choke in the ‘off’ position, but once I get the car running, and can see that it does (or doesn’t) work, I’ll make a decent bellcrank instead of the quick ‘bodge’ that I made to check the system.

I’ll re-fit the cover when it’s all done.

Give me any comments you might have.

(Apologies for the quality of the photographs, the batteries in my camera were flat, so I had to use the camera on my cell phone.)
