The manaul tranny on my 06 GT has developed an annoying and unpleasant sounding metallic rattle when it is cold. This happens from cold start, occurs at about 2,000 rpm, and only occurs when the car is in gear (any gear) and moving forward. It stops when the engine reaches normal operating temperature. It is a high-pitched metallic rattle. Any ideas?

It may be caused by 2 missing bolts on the bottom of the tranny bell housing dust cover. They are 10mm dia. x 1.5mm thread size, and no longer than 3/4". They should be available from a local Ford dealership.

my shifter squeaks / rattles in 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear all the time.

it is a plasticky sounding squeak and annoys the hell out of me. of course the dealership "could not reproduce" the sound so I'm just dealing with it for now.

more like they heard it and knew it was the result of shoddy interior materials. any thoughts or advice?

How was the heat shield problem fixed? Was it missing a fastener or something?

And the shifter assembly will make some squeaks and rubbery rattles from time to time. It is, in fact, shoddy interior materials plus shoddy sound-deadening. Not a big deal, and you will get used to it. It is the new sounds that worry me :)

Are you sure it's the tranny? My son's '05 made an annoying rattle only when it was cold and it was a heat shield under the car. Just a thought.
The 2 missing bolts on the tranny dust cover was the cause of the metallic noise on my manual 05. Installed them, and the noise disappeared.

I have the exact same problem blaise. It started a few days ago after I brought it back from it's 15,000 mile service checkup. I was gunna crawl under the car after work today and see if I could figure it out. If not and no one comes up with any other ideas on here I'll call up the service department again.

I'm aware of the 2 bolts missing on some '05 cars. Most people complained about the rattle at certain rpm's whether the car was cold or hot.

My son found the heat shield rattle under his car. I'll ask him when he's around about the details.

He said it was the right side cat. It was rattling inside so he took the catted h-pipe off and swapped it with my old one that I still had laying around. He told me to tell you that you can jack up the car and smack the cat.....no noise, but if you smack the system back at the H section it would cause the cat to rattle.

This might be the center stack rattle, which is fixed by put two large hose clamps around the mounting points of the H pipe to trans bracket. There is a TSB out for this fix if this is the problem. When I first got my new stang, I had this very annoying rattle problem and could of swore that it was coming from the tranny, I even had the dealer pull it out and rebuild it, but the noise was still there. Put the two hoes clamps on, no tanny noise.

It turns out that the rattle was coming from the exhaust. The dealership replaced some exhaust brackets, and the rattle is gone. Easy come, easy go :)

Do you know which section of the exhaust? When I'm driving it sounds like it's coming from the rear but I had my dad listen for it when I was in the driveway the other day and he said it sounded like it was coming from up front when he was outside. I brought it to the dealership a while ago and they said they couldn't find anything loose, although it was a hot day when I brought it in so they didn't get to hear the rattle at all. I'm thinking I'll bring it in and leave it over night when it's supposed to be cold so they can for sure hear it and hopefully fix it this time.

Mine is doing the same thing and sounds like it's coming from the passenger side of the trans while sitting in the car...already removed dust shields just to eliminate that possibilty, sometimes it rattles at a stop as well but it's not all that consistent and still continues to do it while warm.

Mine rattles at very low rpm when engaging the clutch. Something with the load on the tranny I guess. It does this hot or cold. My cars exhaust symphony pretty much takes care of that problem. Sometimes it gets annoying but I just blast the Sirius and its all better.
