I have read about some people wanting to step down to taller gears because their new combo makes their 3.73's useless at the track.

At what point (how much HP) does one decide to step down from something like 3.73's to 3.55's or 3.27?

Thanks,
Gabe

Really a piss poor way to choose gear ratios.

If anything you need to be choosing gears that will go along with your tire combo/trap speed/motor combo.

"Stepping down” in gears because you are making more power is simply a band aid for a different problem which is lack of traction which should be addressed.

for the track, gears should be determined by tire height, trap speed & engine rpm.

I'd say when you run out of RPMs before getting to the finish line.

Very true, very true. Usually try to make it up with tire first though unless tire size is class limited.

I'll add to that and say when you run out of transmission gears & engine rpm before going through the traps at the track...

The only time your really going to run out of gear is if your pushing alot of HP and your at a gear ratio of 4.10 or higher. I knew someone who used to have a 91 GT Blown H/C/I making 464 RWPH w/ 4.10's and he would run out of gear and have to shift to 5th in the 1/4. 3.55's and 3.73's are a good choice for pretty much any combo blown or not.

I'm going to the track today and expect to cross the line at about 6100 rpms. So I'm pretty much maxed out. I took my car up to 6k yesterday and it was right about 105 mph. Perfect gear for my set-up!

Yeah, horsepower has nothing to do with gear choice.
