Max PSI out of stock block?

Corral is absolutely ****ed up for me right now, if I edit a post it ends up getting deleted and when I make a new topic or a new post it rarely shows up on the screen...usually it lets me make it then it never shows up, but onto my question.

I have a 1990 GT Hatchback with BBK Shorty Headers, MAC O/R H-pipe, Magnaflows, MM SFC's, K&N Filter, MGW, Strange 10-ways, Griggs LCA's and FRPP UCA's.

I got the car from the man who bought it off the showroom floor, it was babied all its whole life and was never beat on...the man was a Colonel in the Navy. It currenty has 120k miles on it and burns no oil, runs real good, never had a problem with it.

I am hesitant to tear it down and do HCI because I don't want to potentially ruin a good motor but i NEED more power. I get a free nitrous kit from my work and I was wondering what the MAX PSI I could run if I were to bolt on a supercharger, not running nitrous just the SC. I want to keep it below the 450WHP limit of the block, while still being able to run some sort of nitrous shot just for the small cooling effect while also adding HP.

I don't want to get into intercoolers/aftercoolers or any SC kit over $2,200 so I am pretty much limited to the Novi 1000 and entry level Vortech.

Also, in a recent 5.0 Mustang Mag they put 17lbs of boost through their Fox with HCI and stock block...granted it is a timebomb how can they get away with it? Also, the two SC's I can get max out at about 15psi so would I be able to run that through my engine safely?

I am not sure if running at 15psi would cause me to blow gaskets or something, I know I will still be below the 450whp limit of the block seeing as I have about 220whp now.

Thanks for any and all help!

well I guess it all depends on your supporting hardware. If you are running stock fuel system then you are not going anywhere near 15psi. I doubt you could run 15psi with a novi 1000 anyways. 8 psi sounds like a nice number doesn't it? 10 psi max but even then a new fuel pump regulator and upgraded maf and tb and injectors are in order. Atleast this is what i would suspect. I was looking into it for my car but i'm a carb'd 351w so all the supporting hardware is a little easier.

Yea of course I would be buying a new fuel pump, injectors, maf, and tb because I will be boosting it at 10psi MIN. I want to take it as high as I can go, I just dont know if I will be able to run it at the capacity of the Novi 1000 which I read was somewhere between 12-15PSI.

What is the max PSI I can run without supporting mods? 8?

Thank you!

I really don't think you are going to get 12 psi out of a novi 1000. Paxton sells them claiming 5-6 psi boost on a 302. I know you can swap the pulley but i would think going to 12psi even if it can is going to take it way out of its efficency range.

that being said the novi 1000 is said to be capible of supporting 650hp. So maybe it can get you to the 12psi boost lvl you want. as for what psi with out supporting mods i was looking at the install instructions and they don't recomend upgrading anything with the 5-6 psi install. so i guess thats max psi. I doubt i would even run that on a stock fuel pump.

What it really comes down to is your going to have to pay to play. If your looking to push that much psi...along with everything already mentioned you'll also need to replace the head gaskets with something boost friendly. Head studs would be in order as well...and you'll want to do a leakdown test to ensure everythings sealing properly. With higher boost levels comes excess blowby.

Another thing to keep in mind is that with higher boost levels comes more heat. You have to find some way to keep your intake charge cool...and to do so will require either an intercooler or meth injection kit. Without them you'll be forced to reduce large amounts of timing to keep from detonating.

How much PSI would I be able to run before I look into getting new gaskets? Or an intercooler?

I would prefer not to pull the heads off of the car, seeing as that is why I am debating doing a SC in the first place...instead of HCI.

Thanks!

Once you start pushing much more than 8psi on the stock head bolts and gaskets you'll be walking on eggshells. As far as an intercooler goes, that really depends on the superchargers efficiency. I would think you might (and I stress might) be able to get away with ~ 12psi, but any more than that I would imagine your IAT's would be dangerously high without meth or a cooler.

14 PSI i ran with my turbo, popped driver side head gasket. ARP Head studded and oringed the heads after.
1 dyno pull at 15+ psi made 660 RWHP with my 80mm turbo. Needless to say that was only done once and i do suggest doing it. :p

I have a built 306 :nice: but stock block :notnice:
