Wow, i haven't posted on here in a few years, but I'm currently have a car crisis. My car's been overheating, and thought it was the thermostat that was locked up. So after replacing that, it still was making rattling noises and overheating. And today my mechanic decided he thinks the head is cracked or the gasket's blown. I was just wanting to see if anyone knows about how much those repairs run? From the way everyone talks to me about it, i'm guessing my mustang will be soon put out to pasture.

Overheating not caused by the thermostat is frequently an indication of a blown head gasket. Hopefully your head is not cracked unless you've really overheated it. The mechanic should be able to run some tests for a blown head gasket, such as putting shop air into each cylinder through the spark plug hole and listening for air escaping from the radiator (after obviously draining the coolant and bringing that cylinder to TDC).
If the gasket is blown, all is not lost. Look at it as your chance to upgrade to those ported heads!
