you misunderstand my statement/question. At what speed do you aerodynamically need the downforce from a wing??

My RX-7 is very stable all the way to 150 mph - I havent been faster than that yet.

I would consider a front air dam first keep the air from under the car.

My $0.02

Really though I wonder at what speed you need addtional downforce.

It depends on a lot of things. If the car is stable at high speeds, there's no need to add the weight and wind resistance of a wing. If, however, your car is like mine and is all over the road at 130, things need to be done. Improving under chassis aerodynamics is typically the best way (lowering it and adding an air dam, like you said). Special hoods, like Griggs heat extractor hood also help by pulling air from under the car (resulting in low pressure) and allowing it to flow over the car (resulting in relatively higher pressure).

High wind velocity actually creates lower pressure (the same reason a plane flies) so when high speeds are reached, low pressure above the car actually sucks it up, resulting in less traction. Definately a bad thing cooking into a corner at 120. If the low pressure below the car is unable to compensate for the low (but relatively high) pressure over the car. Other methods must be employed. Hence, a wing to help provide additional downforce.

ok baglock, i went and played on the highway tonight, and it was fun to say the least! ok now to the important part, i dont know exactly what speed i was going(speedo only goes to 85 and it was well past that), but my car topped at 5000 rpms and kinda bounced back alittle and thats when i let off! if i had to guess speeds, i would say between 90 and 95, i dont know exactly, but best guess maybe like 92 or 93! i hope that info helps, cus i want to go talk to TJ tomorrow about doing the gears! :D  :D

Accurate results would be nice. Instead of maxing the speedo, get to 65 (on the mark) and tell me what the tach says. Or get to 3500 or 4000 RPM's and tell me what the speed is. I need accuracy to get accurate results. Also, I still need the tire size.

ok ill try again tomorrow, the only acurate speed and rpm i know is in first so that wont help! and the tire size is 205/65/15.

According to my calculations, you have 4.11's if you were doing 92. If you really do have 3.73's, then you were doing 101. It's tough to say because of the automatic. You were in 3rd, right? Not 4th, or overdrive? If so, I'd say you have 4.11's in the @ss end. There is an easy way to check for sure and involves jacking a wheel off the ground.

As far as the 4.56's, not knowing what the final drive in your auto is, I can only compare it to that of a 5spd OD (not perfect, but close I'm sure). In that case, at about 80, you'd be turning a little over 3.5K.

i had it in regular drive. it shifted from first at redline, from second at redline, and it didnt shift again! i got it up to 5000 rpm and it would go anyfurther, and then just went back to like 4800 or 4700! i was surprised at the rpm's i was getting! i didnt even think my littel 2.3 had it in her!

You're assuming we don't have the capability to "see" through into your garage, and beyond...

Say, can I give you the address' of some hot chicks...I mean, um, potential terrorists, and have you take some "and beyond..." pics. :D ;) :p

well finally got under the car, and i have 3.73's so that ends the quest to find out what i have! now i just need to decide what i really want to do with the car! i hate making decisions!:D

oh come on, i thought that you went both ways!:D

lets not get into that ... oh i saw a vw bug today, it was bright green with turbo stickers all over it, of course it was lowerd w/ the coffee can exaust and had a body kit, but that's not what caught my eye, as i was leaving an old fat lady walks up to the car and gets in it, i thought it was kinda funny ... but then again i'm easily amuzed ... :D ;)
