A few days ago, the mark viii fan in my 5.0 quit working. I found that the ground terminal on the connector and on the fan motor itself had melted. I use a DCC controller, the wiring and splices are all fine. Since I assume this is not a common problem, I'm guessing that the fan windings shorted out causing excessive current draw. My question is: Will this happen again? Or was this just a fluke?

Just a fluke. If it had melted only at the connector or before, I would say you used too small of a wire to feed the fan. But since it melted at the fan, it's just a bad fan motor. You can buy just the motor from your local Ford dealer or any auto parts place. This way you don't have to fork over big money for a whole fan assembly.

Did you blow the fusible link for the controller?

A bad electrical connection at the fan motor can cause the terminal to burn up (bad connections = resistance = heat).

That said, I do recall that some Mark VIII fan motors (Siemens motor as I recall) had issues with the fan connector.

Good luck.
