Midpipe Ques.

My buddy has a 2001 GT and a stock hpipe that someone gave him. He was wanting to gut the cats on the stock pipe and use it on his car. I thought maybe we could cut the back 2 off and replace them with the same size diameter pipe and just gut the front 2. Or maybe just gutting the front 2 and leaving the back 2 on. Would this work and give about the same performance as an o/r hpipe? We have a little time on our hands and just like messing around trying different things. Plus he doesn't have alot of money to spend on his mods so he's trying to do it as cheap as possible by doing things himself. I also thought about measuring the box on my prochamber and maybe making one up and welding it in place of the pipe on the hpipe.

The camber on the Prochamber has baffles in it. I don't think it would work just welding a box onto the pipe. Just gut the cats and go with that. You can also find H-pipes pretty cheap used.

gutted cats don't give performance, just make your car loud, either cut them out and replace it with pipe which, is still pretty ghetto, or buy an O/R one for like $200

You guys are forgetting something, he doesn't have alot of money to do this with. Whats ghetto about it. We're basically making our own exhaust instead of paying someone money for their product. And he doesn't want a xpipe. The pipe is basically going to be and look like an o/r pipe once we get the pipes welded in it.

I'm not asking if we should do this or buy one. I'm asking if we should expect close to the same gains as an o/r pipe and if someone has heard one that someone else has done.

If this is ghetto then someone that takes their truck to an exhaust shop to have dual exhaust put on is ghetto too then, right. Basically they're cutting stock pipe and making a dual exhaust kit and welding together to make the kit. Sure beats the hell out of paying $500-$600 for a kit already made.


Same as with the o/r pipe, if you can make one of the same quality why pay a company when you can make your own.

Don't take offense...it's not worth getting upset over someone elses dumb comments.

If money is an issue, and depending on how much it would cost to weld the stock with nipples, look for a used pipe. I got a Mac H for 75 bucks.

whoever had my car ( 96 gt) before me removed the stock cats and replaced with pipe..sounds GREAT as there are no tail pipes...seems more responsive than similar year GT's I have driven with stock cats...
