Is it possible to mini tub my 67 Fastback and still use the all of my interior panels and have use of the rear folding seat? Basically keep the interior stock. If it’s possible how wide of a tire can I run? Id love to run 335’s back there but im pretty sure that won’t be possible..

Hey there,

I'm currently re-doing my 67 GT Fastback into a full on, one-off pro touring custom for sema 2011 (if all goes well) I went with Rushforth Wildside 18x10's for the back with a 295/35/18. On the back of a 67 they look huge! I would say based on the different tire manufacture's and the research I've done (diff Manufacturers may fit bigger/smaller) a 315/35/18 is the biggest you can go without getting into the frame rail, would which result in interior panel modification: this would be all the stars lining up, nailing the backspacing etc. I actually got a chance to meet both Ring brothers at Sema this past year and asked them how come they don't run a 335 or 345 on the mustangs they build like everyone and their dog run on the first gen camaro's. They said because size wise those big tires don't look right and also, to get into the frame rails and re-working them and all the interior panels is a ton of work, that makes the interior of the car a lot narrower than it already is..

A visual trick to make for a larger appearing wheel, is to order with a small amount of backspacing which creates the dished look. I went with an 18x10 on the back with 4.75" of backspacing - this resulted in a little over a 4" dish in the wheel.

Check out my website with some updated pics of my new wheels. I have the complete air ride suspension kit front and rear and once I can get the wheel tubs done, I will be ordering the custom dutchman rear end and will hope to have the ride height set this spring..

Good luck!

not sure, but start your search here

this is a nice wheelhouse kit - don't know if the folding seat is compatible with this, though. It does, basically, make your inner wheelhouse parallel with the frame rail so as the suspension compresses in a turn, you have the most clearance possible. (actually, you could probably dimple the wheelhouse in a little bit to give another inch as it compresses)

Thanks... Do you know what the widest size is you can fit on the front without modification?

You can go 325 at least with a mini tub. But a mini tub will do you no good in these cars without moving the leaf inward. You can get 315's in there with stock tubs and leafs in the stock location. Just takes a little bit of a BFH. Without going into the frame rail I'm sure you can go 335 no big deal. That being said the lower you go, the skinnier the overall has to be because the fender slopes in as you go up with the tire.

I run a 245/40/18 with a 5.25 of backspacing, based on my cars fitment etc, I would say I could get away with a 255 or 265 front tire on an 8 or 8.5" wheel. However, keep in mind the lower you want the car to ride the more conservative you'll have to be with the tire/wheel sizes..

I talked to a few guys that autocross their mustangs last night and they all said to run the same front and back. They were running 245's but im thinking i might try 255/45/17 with 4.5 backspacing.

hmm, have you measured that on your car to see where it will put the tire in relation to the outer fender lip? I guess you could always run some negative camber to gain some clearance - but based on my car and a couple of my dad's 4.75" was needed at least. Just make sure you double check your measurements... The thing about custom wheels is that once you order them, they're yours!

Those measurements were also with stock suspension and drum brakes. Im sure with both upgraded that will change it a little too. Luckily 4.5 isn’t a custom backspacing on any of the wheels I want, 4.75 would be.

This may be an older thread, but I find it very useful. I want to run a 315 or 325 35 20 on the rear of my 67FB.. Should I:

A. Buy the autoworks minitub,

or

B. Cut my inner wheelhouse, and move it in 2-3 inches?

I want to keep the back seat for sure. Any good thoughts just let me know. Please

Matt
