I bet this topic has been beat to heck, but there are no FAQs or other postings on stangnet (just try searching for T5, it's hosed up!)

As some of you know, I have a 66 stang with a 351W. I guesstimate it has around 450 hp and 480 ft/lbs of torque. It is for performance street and occasional race use, just like many of you out there. I have a C4 that has the 2nd gear servo going out, plus I am swapping to a 3.73 posi explorer rear axle. I plan on driving it on the Power Tour next year and don't want it spinning 3400 on the highway, so I am looking into an overdrive transmission. I would like to stick to a T5 because of the stock shifter location, no need to floorpan mods, etc. Plus parts are easier to come by. I already bought a WC T5 for $300 from a buddy, but I know in stock configuration it will hardly hold up to the power. What are my options for an overdrive? I can sell the stock T5 and buy something else, but I read the TKO and T56 transmissions need to have the floorpans cut, which I realy wouldn't want to do. What do you guys think? Anyone with high hp and T5s out there in classics? Also, $2000 for a TKO sounds like cash that can be better spent elsewhere, whereas a T5 with upgraded gearset can be bought for half that. I would like good durability given my combo, without heavy powershifting etc.

When I was looking to put a stick in my car I also initially looked at a T5 for the same reasons you are, cost. Now I didn't and don't plan on hammering my car like you do. I read other forums ( I don't remember which ones) and posts on this forum and the people using the T5 in high torque cars seemed split down the middle between tranny failures and no tranny problems at all. I ended up biting the bullet and got a toploader first and then a TKO because I wanted to be sure that what I installed would last and not break.

A new motorsport t5z runs about $1300, and you can sell your old one on ebay or whatever. I dont know offhand what the t5z is rated for, my guess is not quite as much as what youre making. I would think as long as youre not constantly beating on it, especially with only street tires, you would be just fine.

Put some 185 series tires in the rear and you'll never have traction long enough to break the T5

modern driveline says the t5z can take 450 hp without being abused, but I wanna beat it occasionally! I got a guy who may be selling me a junked out T5 for $150 for me to put a D&D gearset in. Stay tuned and we can find out. I know the D&D is stronger than the T5z gearset, so maybe this may be a valid option. What is basically the diff between a world class T5 and a T5z?
