Moan or groan in rearend(clutchpack issue)

What is up with the TSB Bulletin from ford about the clutch pack issue on some 8.8 rearends that have a moan or groan on tight turns? Mine has it but i dont want to take my rearend gears out unless i really have to. Is it really hurting anything to leave it like it is? Ford has not recalled it, it is only a technical bulletin from ford saying that some mustangs might experience this promblem and you have to replace the clutch pack in the rearend. Does anbody else experience this issue on tight turns?

I had it & I had mine repaired. I didnt think the gear had to be removed but could be wrong. No issues since.

The tsb will fix it... for some people only temporarily. Mine had the moan & groand, got the tsb fix, and 10,000 or so miles later it came back. If you want to try a quick fix, just throw a 1/2 bottle of Ford Friction Modifier in the rearend. It seems that the new clutches that Ford uses in the rearend require a couple more ounces of this friction modifier than what Ford is putting in. When my groan came back, I added some more friction modifier and I haven't heard a sound since then.

When I took mine in they replaced the clutch pack and the noise got worse. They replaced the ring/pinion. Now 3K later, it's making the same noise. I have been told that other than being annoying, it isn't an issue. Get the flowmaster's, they drown the noise out!

What is the TSB number for this? I want to see if my Ford dealer will fix mine (it's making the same noise) but put in 4.10s while they have it apart

Where and how do you put friction modifier in the rear end. Could i do this myself?

there is a 3/8 plug on the front of rear end housing ( on the opposite side of the rear end cover) pull the plug out and then dump a little modifier in.

This noise does not cause any problems and the limited slip will work well. In fact with too much modifier you will loose some limited slip performance.

Do you think i should leave well enough alone and dont add any modifier. if the noise is not hurting anything then i dont want to mess anything up by adding more modifier.

It isn't hurting anything. As it was mentioned by others the friction modifier will reduce the performance of the limited slip. I purposely run no friction modifier for better performance. You can always bring it in to get it done at around 20,000 miles to save you some $$ on doing the routine maintenance on the diff.

half a bottle of friction modifier won't hurt a thing. My car pulls 1.84-1.89 60's allllll day long, so it sure hasn't hurt my performance.
