Mobil 1 ATF in PS pump?

I'm going to be finishing the A/C delete soon, and I'm going to do a little rehab work on my '92's PS pump while I'm in there. It needs new hoses, and it has normal PS fluid in there because the shop that installed my rack were morons.

Anyway, I know what it calls for is "Type F" ATF, but I was curious how much different Mobil 1 ATF is, and would it work? I would like to throw some synthetic in there to see if it helps with noise at all, but I don't want to do any harm. I'm guessing that the Type F ATF and Mobil 1 ATF are similar enough that it would work.

Anyone ever do this? Mobil 1 is readily available, and for the amount I need, the extra cost would be negligible..

Use what is recomended. If you use the wrong stuff it will cause leaks. I don't know what type of fluid mobil 1 is, ask you local autoparts store they might know.

cant help you there. i would flush it through with some cheapo Tyle F before filling it with the good stuff. i run Redline in mine.

Thanks...how much different is Type F than normal ATF? I was under the assumption that Type F was an older type, and newer ATF could be used in it's place...

No one has tried this?

people have tried all sorts of funny stuff. LOL. the thing i worried about was not the actual fluid's abilities (it is all hydraulic fluid), but rather the fluids compatibilities and effects on seals and soft parts.

i bet lots of people will chime in - like i said guys run all sorts of funny stuff in theirs. I do recall one guy (from years ago when i joined here) that said he bought his stang new and in the first week he swapped to M1 for the PS and his pump was at 230K miles and still running strong.
take that for what it is worth (that and 8 bucks will get you coffee at the corner coffee shop).

Type F ATF is an older type. It is a high friction fluid used in older (pre-80s) transmissions. There is a definite requirement in transmissions, but I'm not sure about PS units. I've seen your question come up in other forums with no definite answer. Some have said they have switched to the Mobil 1 ATF without any problems, but it may depend on the type of seals in the steering system.

One thing everyone seems to agree on is to do a good flush of the system before changing over and not to mix fluid types.

Where does it read that Ford recommends ATF? I was always under the impression that ATF has detergents in it that eat away at your rack's seals. I actually learned that the hard way. I use what the same stuff the 'morons' use, power steering fluid.

Look in the back of your owners manual...under lubricant specifications. Power steering fluid is similar enough that it works fine, but Type F ATF is what is called for...

I drained mine from the bottom and put Lucas power steering repair or whatever its called, and it stopped the wining.

Thanks. I'm also looking at Amsoil as they make a Type F synthetic ATF that is only about $6/quart.

Anyone else?

I use Valvoline Synpower power steering fluid in my 89 mainly because it contains seal conditioners and a stop leak.My car still has the original rack.It`s never leaked,but due to it`s age I figured the seal conditioners and stop leak would be good insurance.
Flush the old fluid out before adding new fluid to the system.

I did the same in my 90, its now has the quietest ps pump of my 3 Fords.

ford specifies type f in their racks from the factory.regular mercon is ok also parts store fluid should not be used as it doesnt mix well with the atf and will cause pump noise .i work at a ford dealer as a tech

i also have worked at Ford, and we used regular old ATF Merc or Dex. No different from what I saw while I was there.. Never caused any leaks or pump noise. All dealers are different though
