Mobile 1 (5-20) GONE for now

One of the reasons, yes.

There's nothing wrong with 5W-20. A good percentage of new cars are recommending it's use.

Will 5-20 work with the 4.6 ....yes. Will it provide enough lubrication for the engine...no. 5-20 is some thin sh1t. Oil pressure will decrease and there will be more rotation friction. Like I said, one of the MAIN reasons Ford did it was to change EPA ratings. 5-20 is just too thin for my liking, especially on older modular engines that burn oil faster. 5-20 is more likely to get past the piston rings compared to 5-30. JMO....

There was something said about the thicker oil could kill the valves. 5-20 is recommended on my year(02). Regardless I let the engine come up to temp before I exceed 2500rpms.(Prochargers instructions)
And I do not do high revs with a cold engine

It is best to lay off the boost until the engine is at normal operating temp. But 2500 rpm's is ridiculous. You won't even see a slight amount of boost at that RPM. I really want to read that note from the procharger instructions...

Also, REALLY thick oil can damage your 4.6 because it has very thin oil passages in the block. But even straight 30 weight oil would most likely be fine. Now 50W oil would be a totally different story.

It has nothing to do with boost at 2500 rpm, it has to do with cold metal being under undo stress. All supercharger companies say to let every thing get nice and hot before putting an engine through it's paces.

2500 is a good rule of thumb regaurdless if you have a supercharger or not.

And as far as oil weights go, for those of you who think you are smarter than the people who built your car go ahead and use whatever oil you want. For me it says 5-20w that's what I am putting in my car.

i use motorcraft 5-20 is that bad???

Nothing wrong with it at all. I run it in both my Mustangs and my Explorer. With zero problems.

at 11.50 for the 5 quart jug. Nothing else is worth it. I change the oil every 4,000 miles and have no problems.
The DD 02 Mustang gets changed about every 2 months, the Explorer every 4 months, and the 96 Mustang gets it every 6 months.

Zero problems. The 02 has a mainseal leak so I have to add some every once in awhile. The Explorer and the 96 don't leak or burn any.

Nothing wrong with Motorcraft at all.
Best deal out there in my opinion. I don't so any serious with my cars so I can't bring myself to spend $30 on an oil change when I get the same protection for $16.

It's what Ford recommends and puts in the cars can't be that bad.

They said 5W-30 was thin years back. That's the old and incorrect school of thought. There's plenty of 0W-20 and 0W-30 oil in use today and no one has problems. Engineers are very smart and know what they're doing. They recommend 5W-20, so it's fine to use it. Alot of the 5W-20's and 5W-30's aren't that far apart in specs, so using either is acceptable.

If you'd like a lot of great information from nerdy, techy oil guys, there's a lot of it in the Bob Is The Oil Guy forums. I'd recomend some reading up on this.

I know guys that have used 0w-20/30 and they got rod knock. That oil is WAY too thin for my liking. Say what you want, but 0 weight oil is deadly IMO. High mileage motors especially need thicker weight oil to prevent blow by. 0 weight oil just doesn't lubricate the engine enough.

My .02

On the topic of Synthetic Oil, I run Mobil 1 5W30 and only drive my car 3K a year. So can i get away with only 1 oil change a year with synthetic or does it still go bad and should i change it at least every 6 months?

The oil companies "say" the oil can stay clean for 7k miles, but why not spend the extra $20 every 3k miles to ensure the oil is clean FOR SURE? JMO....

I've used 5w30 in my 96 Cobra since I got it at 30K. Since then, I've added a Vortec supercharger, and I still run the same conventional 5w30 oil I ran when it was stock. Car now has 54K on it. No need for synthetic.

I also use conventional ATF in my T45. I have my T45 at a transmission shop right now getting a new reverse synchro and they said ALL other parts still look brand new. And that thing has 10,000 supercharged miles on it, with 414RWHP and 366RWTQ. Both numbers higher than the factory rating. Its all driver. (They think the reverse was a defect from the factory. Had 45 thousandths of play in it and the factory spec is 10 thousandths or less.)

I run synthetic or syn blend 5w-20 in my 50k 'o2 and my brother runs good 'ol dino 10w-30 in his 90k 'o1

I change the oil in my car every 3-4 months, my brother changes his *maybe* once a year

I flog the junk out of my car on a weekly basis, my brother's car rarely sees 3k rpm

Only problems between the 2 was my driver side window and his plastic intake, I don't think these cars are too picky when it comes to oil:shrug:

No need for synthetic.

honestly, this is the truth. But I figure I'm paying the same amount (maybe a little more) for mobil 1 in the 5qt jugs at walmart. Nonetheless, I have ran conventional oil too, and it seems to stay just as clean as the synthetic.

BTW- I beat my stock internal motor to hell with close to 450whp; and my compression is phenomenal.
