I came across a deal on 1999 Cobra brakes for my 98 GT. The guy is selling me everything....he is basically disconnecting them where the rubber line screws in at the rigid line, and selling me everything. My question is, since he is selling to me this way , is the re-assembly as simple as installing the rotors and calipers, and re-connecting the flexible lines to the rigid lines and bleeding them?

Also, on the rear brakes, I think the rear Cobra rotors are a larger diameter than the GT's (please correct if wrong). Can I use my stock GT calipers with the Cobra rotors, if I purchase the caliper stand-off brackets that some companies make for use with larger rotors? Thanks for any help.

yes and yes, make sure you get the banjo bolt that screw the brake line into the caliper...and while your at it you should get some new brake lines(stainless)

the rear is not as easy. The calipers are the same, the cobra rotors are @ 1" larger and you will need the Cobra rear caliper mounting brackets. The axles will need to be removed to access the bolts to install/uninstall these brackets...thats what makes the rear cobra brake upgrade a Pain In The Ass! How much are you getting it for?

keep in mind that your stock spare will not fit. you will need the Cobra 17x4 wheel.

Question... when have any you ever blown a tire so bad that you needed to change to the donut, instead of driving home with a nail or just calling a tow?

ya i just did the brakes on my 98 GT on thursday. i put on cobra rears, and when i had the axles out i put in Moser 28 spline with 3" ARP studs. the front i went with the 2000 Cobra R 4 piston Brembo brakes. im not sure if its those or the 275/40/17 Michelin Pilot Sports A/S's, but the car literally stops on a dime.

I have several times on several different cars. Drive for enough years and just about anything can happen. Do you really want to wait for a tow truck when it takes 10 mins to change a tire?

For the front, yes it's that simple. Put on the rotor, bolt on the caliper and attach the soft lines to the hard body line and bleed the brakes.

Out back, you want to purchase the FMS 2300-M rear Cobra disk kit. It's about $180 and comes with everything you need to put rear cobra disks on your GT.

Here's a write-up.

Twice. Once in my '88 5.0 Mustang and the other time in my '93 Lincoln Mark 8

Both times the tire went flat on me while traveling on a 45MPH 3-lane "highway" where i could not pull over right away. After hobbling to the side of the road on a flat tire and rim, the tire had been so chewed up that it would never hold air again. I had to swap to the donut and drive it home.

Do you want a tow truck dragging your car on its' quality wheel?
Prepare for emergencies before they happen.

what you can do is keep the regular spare tyre, if you do blow a front, you will have to swap one of the rears to the front, then put the spare on the rear. that is if you have the same size all around.

if your going to call a towtruck at least get a flatbed one.

yeah i guess.. but noone in my family has ever had a blowout... but then again 90% of my driving is done on sealed interstates which could make a difference i guess.

Are there any issues concerning brake porportioning from front to rear that have to be addressed so the rear brakes do not have a tendancy to lock-up after the conversion, or is the GT pretty much set like the Cobra is from the factory?

I forgot to answer your ?......$200 for everything. Calipers have about 45k miles on them, slotted rotors and Hawk pads have 1500 miles on them.

no the cobra fronts work great with the rears...does not feel over powering at all. Now if you were upgradeing to some 14" 6piston brakes i'd say the rears would need to be better but these work fine together. Damn 200 for front and rear, thats a good price.

Nah, you should be good. If you have ABS it will overcome any differences in proportion.

With the Cobra brakes, you will lock up the fronts before the rears no matter what is on the back, which is the safer way to be.
