So, I am working on stripping the 66, and decided to strip all areas I could see rust and I found 3 problem areas. now I need your recomendations.

Areas found

2 on Front Lower corner of the drivers door they are approx 3-4mm in size and go clear through, the above size is after I knocked the soft metal off.

3rd is the area around the antena... it is rusty around the edge, I would like to not have an antena at all.

So, the questions I pose are should I have the areas welded, can I fill them, or should I get a ned fender and a door skin.

I am looking for your input and ideas

weld in patches in the door and fill the antannae hole.

how much do shops charge for such a task

alot of body shops will not touch rust repairs. Although yours are minor.

I would drive it by a body shop or two and ask for an estimate.

Curious - why don't they touch rust repairs? Some kind of liability issue or something?

Because there's usually more to rust than what you can see, and it's only when you start stripping finishes off, and starting to repair that you find the full extent. Difficult to price, and I'm sure there are plenty of owners that won't pay the final price.

Lots of hassle for the accident damage repair bodyshops that just want to fix late model fender benders...

Depending on how bad the doors are rusted you can get entire outter skins replaced. IIRC they also make the inner shell in repop.

Really the cheapest way to go is to do it yourself. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, you can buy the skins as someone mentioned and find a reputable body man to do the work. If you start going into that, be prepared to have the body man tell you there is more cancer on the car.

there is little profit compared to doing insurance jobs on new cars.


usually the visible rust is the top of the ice berg. they might quote you $1,000. Then tear into a floor pan and find that the torque boxes are rotten and need replaced. Or the patch might be way bigger than what was originally quoted.

My 67 is cancer free. It has no bad rust on it. But every body shop I took it to gave me abnormally high quotes. My guess was that they did that to scare me off.

imo, you would be best served finding a shop that specialized in restorations.
