I am going to use the 6038 motor mounts on my v8 swap. A diagram I have shows a heat shield between the block and the mount. Is this piece neccesary or even available? PN C5ZZ-6C038-A Thanks

Depends on how much you use the car and what exhaust you have.
If using ceramic headers probably not....but otherwise it will protect the mounts from the heat. You can easily make some out of any metal or look online. I took mine off.

So what is the original spacer made of? Metal, rubber, asbestos?

What spacer? The engine mount? The stock mounts are made of vulcanized rubber stuck between two steel pieces.

I have stock replacement mounts and longtube headers with no shields. I drive mostly at road speed and doubt that the mounts get very warm.
