So I've found a 302 roller motor for my '66 GT now that I've mothballed the original motor. This replacement 302 motor is a 52oz. balanced machine, where my original 289 was a 28oz. unit. Is there a harmonic balancer available where I can use my original bracketry (ie: alternator, water-pump pulley, fan drive) along with a 3-bolt dampener so I don't need to go nuts arranging all new pulleys, etc.? This new motor comes with a 52oz. flywheel, but the dampener is 4-bolt, which changes everything. Am I asking too much for a simple solution? Thanks. GT1966

Pulley

There are a few resources for v belt pulleys on the later 302. March and Ford racing are the expensive way to go. you can usually find what you need in the junk yard on any v8 ford from the mid to late seventys. Good luck

If you will remove the front dress from your old motor (pulleys, water pump, front cover, pointer, alternator, and brackets), then you can buy a 3-hole 50oz balancer from one of the catalog companies like Mustangs Plus, Mustangs Unlimited, etc. They exist and you can find it easily. If you do the above (take from old motor), then just be sure that the new balancer is clocked for the "C" position pointer. There are "A" (10 o'clock), "B" (11 o'clock), and "C" (2 o'clock) balancers out there. You would need the "C" clocking position. Probably a retrofit balancer will be a "C", but it is good to check.

I just went through this. Go buy the Summit OEM replacement 81 and newer 5.0L balancer (50 oz). It is drilled for 3 and 4 bolt and has three timing marks
(10/11/2). Best thing about it is its only like $73.00. Just as a heads up, its covered with a clear painted coating. Do NOT wipe it off with parts cleaner, lacquer thinner or strong solvent as you will remove the coating. This coating is a protective coating to prevent rusting of the balancer. Ask me how I know? I'm using a passenger side inlet water pump, and I'm running Ford Racing pulleys for a 289/302 with a 3 bolt crank pulley. I never ran the stock 289 pullys on this balancer so do not know for sure if they'll fit but the balancer is drilled for 3 and 4 bolt so I'm guessing the stock pulleys will fit. Good thing about Summit, they'll take it back.

+1 with what Outlaw said, I did the same with my 351w, 289 pulleys bolt right up.
:SNSign:

also the weight is bolted in so you can buy another weight if you decide to swap the balancer to a 28oz engine.

Edit: The summit balancers are Pro-Race brand

I use this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford...010QQitemZ200084090553QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Works out to $73 also.

No spacers needed for the original 3 bolt v belt stuff.

Before buying anything, remove both balancers, then with a tape measure, measure the distance from the rear inside the balancer to the front flange where the pulley sits. If it's the same, just drill the the 3 extra holes to fit the 3 bolt pulley on the 4 bolt balancer. Then use timing tape to move the timing marks to where they match the 289 timing cover.
