I'm not going fast enough to have to wear a helmet myself yet, but I'd like to take a couple friends down the track with me soon. I was looking at crash helmets and they're a bit expensive, but my friend has a motorcycle helmet I could borrow.

I just want to know, are these the same things basically? Would I be able to use it at the track?

If not, can anyone recommend a good buy for a helmet, I'm going to get one sooner or later.

Thanks!

If anything most decent motorcycle helmets are way more than good enough for car stuff. Think about it, on a bike you ARE hitting your head on the GROUND if you wreck. They are generally approved beyond whatever a track needs. Most tracks even let you run dirtbike helmets but check with your track beforehand!

A motorcycle helmet IS a crash helmet!!!!

If you run at a NHRA track, you'll need a helmet that meets these requirements.

" 13.99 and quicker must have Snell 95, K98, 2000, SFI 31.1A ,31.2A, 41.1A, or 41.2A helmet. "

EDIT: Found a little info on the difference between the helmets meant for car racing use versus regular motorcycle helmets.

"What are the differences between the SA, M and K standards?
SA Standard was designed for auto racing while M Standard was for motorcycling and other motorsports. There are three major differences between them:
SA standard requires flammability test while the M standard does not;
SA standard allows narrower visual field than M standard (Some SA helmets may not be street legal);
SA standard has rollbar impact test while M standard does not.
The K standards are very similar to the SA standards, however the K standards omit the requirements for flame retardency."

Keep an eye on Ebay. I stole a brand new Snell approved HJC helmet for $21 a few months back. It wasn't the color I wanted but some sanding, paint and clearcoat and it is fine.
