MPH Mongoose Kit install, anyone do it themselves?

I've noticed quite a few of you have the mongoose kits installed from MPH. I was planning on going this route myself sometime in the future (hopefully next year). But It almost seems like everything would bolt on and be ready to go. Just seems like changing the fuel pump, injectors and plugs (is all that hard?). Now, i'm not a mechanic, and just recently started doing my own maintenance on my car, so i'm still kinda learning, but want to tackle this job myself (instead of paying out the ass for labor). But I do have my grandfather, who knows his way around a car, that can kind of help me.

Those with the kits, it supposedly comes with everything you need, correct? So has anyone done the install themselves? How easy was it? Did it come with detailed directions (with pictures?)? Would it be something I could take on myself?

I installed my Vortech Mongoose kit in just a few hours, taking lots of breaks - the instructions for the blower part of the kit are from Vortech, which are totally top notch Hardest parts are installing the fuel pump (gas fumes, sometimes heavy tank depending on fill level), tapping the oil pan (not really hard, just need some JB-weld to seal it, the reccomended Silicone sealant didn't work for me because of the oil/grease it didn't seal, but JB worked wonders), and puting the belt on (you route the belt on BEFORE you bolt the bracket to the timing cover, then after everything is bolted on, use some sort of stick/poking item and push the tensioner which is now wedged between the bracket and timing cover towards the drivers side, at which point you can slip the belt onto one of the lower pulleys, or have a friend pull it over the alt pulley).

Those things you mentioned aren't hard, but it's a lot of somewhat complicated tasks combined together. Sort of like replacing a heater core/evaporator core.. it's not hard, just a lot of tasks.

I would think with another person handy you'd be fine, especially with the directions which are probably written at a 3rd grade level.

Hmm, makes me think that when i get the kit in a few months, i could do it myself as well. How much do most shops charge for a blower install like the mongoose kit? Close to $750?

Im gonna istall my Vortech V1 with aftercooler hopefully sometime next week and i have to move my msd relocate the battery to the trunk mount the waterpump with watercooler and radiator and the powercooler tap the pan and install the s/c its pretty much all bolt on stuff the hardest part is gonna be tapping the oil pan and swapping out the ud pulleys for stockers but its not gonna be that bad save the money and do it yourself.

That was my point lol...not hard, but those are the hardest parts I encountered. Hell, I did the whole kit in less than 8hrs

The shop I got dyno'd at commented that they charge around $1000 for full supercharger kit installs, and that I saved a bundle installing myself. I would do it for $500 for a friend or somethin though...

MPH charges $650 to install the Mongoose Kit. I just checked on it yesterday.

So, sounds easy enough then, i mean, its all pretty straight forward even someone with little to no mechanical skills can do right? I'd be willing to give it a shot.

that phrase has got me through alot of installs. i do all my own work & i did mine with few problems (that i caused installing it) imo, if you have basic mechanic skills you should be good to go. if you can get an extra set of hands to help, all the better. but, definately doable on your own

The only part I personally would be scared of is tapping into the oil pan. Just doesnt seem natural, lol. Id be scared of little chunks of metal getting sent throughout the engine... usually not too freindly towards moving parts.

Thats why you punch it to roll back the pan, then tap it, so all you have is a few shards and such, and more of it is stuck in the newly made threads and tap if you lathered it up in grease. Then, for more insurance, wash out the hole with half a quart of oil, then another quart or so through the drain fitting, then more through the oil cap if you like, just make sure to have the drain plug out when doing this, don't want metal flakes to get up in the crank. Also, while the oil is coming out, you can put a large magnet on the bottom of the pan below the drain. ALSO, you can buy magnetic oil drain plug bolt if you are really really worried lol.

I did mine on my own. It took a little longer then ususalt but that was because it was in an unheated garage in March when it was still -20C.

If is easy, the hardest part is finding out you don't have all the right tools .
