I have a '67 289 and right now I have the stock distributor with a new car and rotor and a Petronix Electronic Ignition. My question is can I benefit any from putting in a whole MSD Distributor and if so are one of these hard to install?
On a stock motor I'd think your fine set up just the way you are, the MSD setup will cost ya about 500 bucks for the dist. and the 6A box. You might get a minimal increase in hp/ gas mileage because the setup discharges 3 sparks at a time versus the pertronics 1 spark per fire. better yeah but a bit pricey.
I'm runnign the MSD ready to run dist. humber 8352...SUMMIT MSD
the install was straight forward, you remove the old points dist and reuse the shaft that was on it. you might have to use some strength to pull it off of the old Dist. Grease up the gear and install, male sure youget the firing order correct though. Also, you may need to order some wires too, 8.5 MM wires from msd are nice.
The kit came with some extra parts to change your vac advance and curve. i jujst threw the Dist in and runs fine. i noticed and increase of MPG by 1.5-2 mpg and the car runs great. Alot of people use another MSD dist that requires the 6A box

There is an msd "drop in" distributor. You just pull the old one out and put the new one in. You may have to change the gear on it out based on your cam. they are really simple and self contained. No box or anything else needed. I went with one to get rid of the crappy plug wires and go with female distributor leads. The drop in distributor allows you to setup your advance and curve as you need it. Monkey said something about reuseing the shaft, but I have never heard anything about that or have to do it with mine.
it was the long stick thing that hooks to the end of that dist. anyways, imo for a street car, the msd drop-in dist is a good upgrade. I had a petronix ignitor before which fried on me after a year and trying to setup the points again got frustrating.
What I have is a 6A hooked up with the stock distributor and the electronic ignition as well as accel 8.5 wires. So would changing the distributor still really matter?

That long "stick" thing that was attached to the bottom of your distributor was the oil pump drive. It's not supposed to come out with the distributor.

Mine does. I dropped it once a few years back. Now I super glue it in. Haha. Never done it again. I could use the collar, but it's so much easier to stab the " Dizzy" now. Drop it in and tap the soleniod and call it a day. I love super glue.
hahaha 10 sec, wish i did the superglue trick before. i had hecjk of a time "adjusting" my dist so that the rod would sit on the botom of the dist. It made for a very fun 30 minutes of my life (insert sarcasm here)
