MSD Ignition

Is it worth it putting a new ignition in the car? Any advantages? I was thinking about putting a MSD 6A box in my car. would it be worth it? How easy is it to put in? Thanks.

I got the 6al and when i put mine and the blaster II coil in i noticed a lot better throttle response, don't know about power, but i enjoyed it

Ok. How hard is it to hook up? Is $125 a good price for one?

That's pretty good, I got mine for like 150 from someone I new brand, never used. It's an absolute cinch to set up, the msd website has diagrams to help out if you need them, but if i'm not mistaken, they come with instructions and everything. Took me a whole 10 minutes to install.

its alot easier if you buy the harness for it too cause then you don't have to cut any wires it just plugs right in hook up to the battery and your gone. I just got mine the only problem i have is figuring out where to mount it

It takes more time to remove the battery and drill mouting holes than it does to hook everything up (GET THE HARNESS - It makes life easier)

No performance gain. But better starting, smoother idle, and maybe better MPG? <- Still haven't figured that one out yet

so that is why mine idles better now...anyhow, yeah they are a breeze to hook up and i also noticed a big difference in thorottle response..

didn't have the harness, but some soldering was easy enough, but the harness can make it a "snap". Had friends that have done both, decided without the harness, it was easy enough for saving 15 bucks or so...

Surprised no one has complained about the MSD 6AL box yet. Generally when I see it mentioned people tear it apart - breaks, fails, blah blah blah.

I had one and when I asked a question about it, people tore it apart, so I sold it and bought other parts.

Nice to see people find it useful. I don't need the rev limiter in the 6AL, so if I can get another 6A cheap, I may do it. Not to hijack the thread, but if anyone has feedback on the reliability of their 6A's or 6AL's, please post.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I kept the MSD Blaster Coil I bought when I bought the 6AL and it has not been any issue. I think I can hear it sort of humming from inside the car when idling (exhaust drowns it out otherwise).

Love both of my MSD 6als. Had to send one back to the factory but they made it really easy to do. It helped my friend pass emissions so you might want to keep that in mind too.

Yeah. I also figure the better the spark the easier it will be to tune the 42# injectors I'll be putting in with my blower install.

May I ask why you had to send one back?

I have the 6AL and love it. I also dont need the rev limiter as I have a SCT tune, but it helped me find a problem. Was having a miss on the dyno and could not figure it out, but I had a good idea. One of my plug wire boots was slightly darkened and I assumed this might be it. I installed blaster and 6al and whaddya know. I can hear it arching FROM INSIDE THE CAR over top of the SC whine and the exhaust. Its a good upgrade and you should be satisfied. Throttle response is much better and idles smoother on a cold start.

Wow, what plug wire was that bad to allow that arching? That way I can steer clear of that brand

LOL, well believe it or not they were the FRPP 9mm set. What happened was the connecting piece inside the boot was not properly pinched from the factory so it came off the plug and rested on the header. This only took off the tip of the rubber so I naturaly bent the connecter inside and cut the burnt piece and went on my merry way. It took about 4000 miles and more boost from the SC to recognize it with the stock ignition and coil. I would have to be at about 5k RPM's for it to surge, but with the MSD it reared its ugly head at an idle. Again, good stuff

The one on my 70 started sputtering over 2500 rpm... It was like a rev limiter kicking in and firing ever other cylinder. Thank god it has enough torque to get its fat ass back home... Anyways I sent it back and they said it was fried possibly from a voltage spike. Could have been with the old 70s electronics and I believe I washed the car the day before and it could have shorted something. In total it costed me 25 bucks for them to fix it.

6A = no rev limiter
6AL = rev limiter

No tune required. Plug it up and go.

If you have no plans for some kind of power adder, then get the 6AL. You can add other accessories so the box will grow with your car.
