Anyone running a MSD Street Fire Ignition box? I have one on my stang, and one day I went out to start the car and it fired up like normal, ran about 25sec. and quit like I had shut the key off. I called MSD and had them help trouble shoot and after a few minutes they just said "yeah, its bad."of course though I had this box on the car for just a few months, but set in the box in my garage for a year, the warranty was up. Sent it off for repairs, got it back, ran it for just under a month and same old thing. Started it today, ran about 45sec. and shut down....no spark. When I got the box back from MSD they had a letter attached saying that water had gotten in it, and they had to replace a resistor. I found it hard to believe especially with the moron trying to tell me why it was twice as much as quoted in the maximum price. Anyways I let a local electronics repairman check it out, and he confirmed it was sealed and there had been 0 water in it. Any one else have any experience/trouble with these? or is it just Murphy's Law working overtime on me?

ugh

Was that code-speak for their tech' spilled his Smart-Water on it while checkin' it out? LOL

Sorry, couldn't help myself. It's just that it sounded so very much like a bull**** answer. If somebody doesn't know something, I appreciate a simple "I don't know" a whole lot more.

Are all of your grounds in place? Batt. to fender, body to block, etc.? Is your alternator maintaining 13-14.5 volts? MSD units are pretty heavy duty but can be easily damaged by stray voltages and spikes.

yeah I would say that is closer to the truth than what I got out of them Lol

Yeah, everything looks right, good clean grounds, all wires connected correctly, and no bare wires anywhere. Charging system working great, right where it needs to be...like I said ran great up until now after I had it repaired. To make it even more disappointing the tag on the unit showed that it had been repaired on 9/27/10......didn't even last a month

I've had that box in my Cobra for over a year now. Knock on wood not a single hiccup. It's under the hood where the Duraspark box was and even having been caught in a couple of rain storms I've still had no issues. Sounds like you either got a lemon or something else is up.

i've got it in the '71. there has been a couple occasions when it will turn off after a few seconds of idling, but after the first time it will start up and stay running. never had it happen except not on a cold start.

Yeah I believe I may have got a lemon. Switched it over with a used 6al system and its doing great. Still have a run-on issue, called MSD and the told me the "correct" place to install the diode, which literally did nothing. Just makes me wonder what "techs" they have on the payroll.

Hey Guys,
I saw a passage similar to this in the Cobra forum. It was suggested, to contact "TechWestRacing", they rebuild MSD units for some of the "Cup" racing crowd.
They have a nice site.
Happy Motoring!
