Precisely what I was talking about. Second highest HP and second lowest DB Rating for magnaflow. Those are the mufflers I got in my CB, my cousin did two years ago when he ordered and a buddy just bought them and were installing them shortly. Same muffs. Same great performance. Same quiet sound.

My car has MAC ceramic 1-3/4" Long Tubes, MAC 3" Prochamber and MAC 3" Cat Back /w 3" Chrome Tips. My car doesn't drone probably because with the 3" pipes it moves the normal drone rpm up by a few hundred. So at 2100-2600 rpm where it normally drones I get nothing. With a 2.5" pipe it will drone like crazy right there. It's probably the most aggressive sounding Mustang I've heard without forced induction (cam .562 lift).

great chart.....that explains why i love my macs so much! i get no drone with my mac catback flowpaths, vibrantredgt love to hear your car i have always felt mine is the most agressive sounding ive heard

Then sir, I would say that you probably aren't familiar with the sound of exhaust drone when you hear it. Mac's are some of the worst offenders when it comes to exhaust drone. Probably as bad, or more so than 40-series Flowmasters. Even when I had my stock H-pipe on, the "bellowing" inside the cabin of my mustang was quite apparent in about the 1,800-2,200RPM ranges. This was with 3.55:1 rear gearing.

My exhaust eventually consisted of Mac 1 5/8" shorties, 2 1/2" X-pipe and full 2 1/2" Mac cat back. Not saying it wasn't a great sounding exhaust....but drone free it was not.

+1 Brian... the MAC's are BRUTAL with the drone... they sound great under throttle, but cruising on the highway is just plain awful. I can only stay at one speed for about 5 minutes before going damn near crazy. I find that I adjust the cruise control in 5 mph increments to change the tone of the drone

im not gonna argue.... dont know if the dynamat is keeping me from the drones but my car has no drone at all at any speed just a pleasant rumble to a huge grunt! cruising at highway speed longtubes or-h pipe and mac catback its easy to listen to radio and talk no drone at all none! BTW i have heard drone in many cars including some ive owned

I had Flowmaster 40 series on my 1991 Z28 (I know, flame away!), and on my 1999 Dodge Ram. Both cars sounded great as long as you were outside and not driving them. The drone about drove me crazy.

Just yesterday I took my GT to Meineke and told them to cut the stock mufflers out of it and put straight pipes in their place. It only cost me $100 so I figured it wouldn't hurt too bad if I decided I didn't like it.

I love the sound. It sounds like a European V8. There is a little droning in the cockpit, but it's negligable. Nothing at all like the Flowmaster's. And, just by seat of the pants feel it has opened up a little power in the car.

I don't understand the straight pipe comments about sounding like a farm truck. I've heard farm trucks and they don't sound anything like my GT now does. It's got a rather exotic bark to it, that's a lot quieter than my Harley with Vance & Hines pipes on it.

To each their own. I found straight pipes to be annoying. If you can handle it and enjoy the sound congrats.

Oh about the time line for the muffler. The book I got the information from is almost 10 years old. I posted it because its a good guide that you can compare to newer technology mufflers. For instance Flowmaster changed the baffles / chambers internally but the sound has not changed. I was watching Speed and I've seen mufflers that now have internal doors that open and close depending on throttle. Still has the same decibel and HP stats. So although many of the mufflers listed may be dated all the manufacture did is dressed up the same turd. Those stats posted are relevant today. The Material to build them has changed but in internally it's basically the same. If you want a chambered muffler we are all accustomed to then Flowmaster, Spintech, MAC and others are your bag. I'm older so I want something a little quieter, a straight thru design with fiberglass packing is more my style (Dynomax, Magnaflow or equivalent is the way to go).

It's good to see people asking questions about mufflers. Usually it's on the car already and too late before its realized probably not the best choice.

The PO of my 92GT replaced the factory Hpipe with an offroad X, and probably 40s dumped. I did some sound checking on Youtube and decided that the Flowmaster Force 2 will fit my bill.. it uses the delta 50s in place of the 40s.

Oh and my MAC's didn't drone either. I say that because they probably did but because my exhaust was so huge it droned at a different cruising RPM. Like mentioned earlier the drone rpm is around 2100-2600rpm. With a full 3" exhaust I think my drone was closer to 3000rpm. However at that rpm it's well over 80MPH and I shouldn't be running that fast. I think RPM (gear ratio) and exhaust size determines the dreaded drone.

My 5 liter explorer (with supercharger) had a mac 3in catback, droned pretty bad.
Switched to a magnaflow and it was definitely better. With that said, please realize that there are multiple magnaflows available now.

Mrbone, sorry but you did NOT get a better seat of the pants feel, there just isn't enough change. Just because it's louder doesn't mean it's going faster.

Well, don't know about 100 hp, maybe 2 or 3. After driving this thing around now for 2 or 3 days I think I'll be putting some mufflers back on it. It was cool to experiment with, but a tad too loud and at higher RPM the engine seems to have some flat spots.

Not gonna go with Flowmaster again... I'm gonna wait and listen to other cars like mine, run 'em down and ask what they have welded it.

And, hate to disagree with you 2000xp8, but seat of the pants feel? Yeah, there's a difference, not much, but a difference. Been doing this a little while, mostly on motorcycles (former pro superbike racer), and I think I can tell a difference in acceleration when I feel it. But thanks for your input.

Aren't they very specific which mufflers you're getting with the full CB exhausts?

Feeling a 2-3hp difference with a 300-500lb motorcycle....sure.
Feeling a 2-3hp difference with a 3,000lb + car.....not likely.

I think your SOTP feeling is more audible than anything. It sounds faster, therefore it must feel faster sort of thing.
