Im going to FINALLY get some mufflers for my car to get it to sound better. Just the mufflers, not a whole catback system. I dont want it too awfully loud attracting unwanted attention but enough to appreciate the difference. A more aggresive note. What type do you guys suggest? Flowmasers, Mac, SLP, Dynomax, etc.

On a side note I saw that Flowmaster came out with a new series. Super 40s. Said to be better than the older 2 chamber mufflers. Anyone know anything about those?

Thanks guys!

I hear just as many people with dynomax and magnaflows, so with whatever you pic, you will have many others to keep you company.
Isnt there a site, mustangexhaust.com or something like that that you can listen to all different types of exhaust combos?
Id try that and go with what you like

Flows are my choise . They sound nice and deep, and dont have that raspy sound like some.

mac flowpaths i got them on my 2nd gt, cause everyone had flows & i dont think i'll get another muffler for any other stang i own. i haven't found another muffler i like better. although if i HAD to choose another besides the flowpaths, it would be the magnaflows

super40s suck. i hate flowmasters. and in my opinion, flowmaster is still partial to F-bodies over stangs. i had 2 chamber 40s, and they vibrate like nuts. at 2,000 RPM you sound like a ricer. they're restrictive too. i am not crazy about magnaflow either, because they just werent loud enough, and that massive picture of mario andretti holding a muffler tick's me off. i'd say from everything youve said, you'll be most happy with dynomax!

oh and i forgot to add. currently now on my 02 GT i have the SLP loudmouth system, and I am in love. i told my friend to take the car around the neighborhood so i could hear it from the outside, and the deep powerful sound of a pissed off V8 was rumbling and echoing off of houses. i was blown away by the awesomness. hehe. it is LOUD.

hold on you think that flowmaster caters to f-bodies, but yet you have a slp system on your car it's a company that was forced to make products for stangs cause the f-bodies are no more. i'm no fan of flowmaster, but that statement just seemed a bit odd. i'll spend my money elsewhere, cause slp would never had made stang parts if they weren't forced to

i know i realized it while i was writing it. but the major difference is, SLP is a good product. blowmasters are not. if i was bashing the SLPs, i'd shoot off how they made products of Fbodies as one of the downsides too.

Thanks guys. From what you all had to say and doing a little more research I think Im going to go with either the Mac Flowpaths SS or the Magnaflows or Mangapacks. How loud would Magnapack mufflers be with the stock exhaust system?

I went through the same thing for my 03 Cobra. I ended up going with welded in magnapacks as I saw no reason to rip out a brand new exhaust system for sound. They are exactly what I wanted, very aggresive under throttle and not annoying at idle. I couldnt believe the sound from just a pair of mufflers and neither could the muffler shop installer. I had a 99 GT with welded in magnapacks and needed a magnaflow catted x to get the same type of sound. Good luck

Partial to f-bods? Aren't flows considered "THE" mustang sound by most?
Also, I've never heard flows on a v8 stang sound like rice (unless it was combined with certain x pipes, but even then I wouldn't describe it as rice).
To each his own.

I think you should always do you midpipe first. midpipe is a majore restriction for sound.

borla xr-1, magnapacks, ss flows, ss flowpaths

you will have to pick a loud muffler if you want to notice much with your stock midpipe.

If you don't want too loud you can't go wrong with magnaflow, I thought mine were quiet at first but they have broken in and gotten louder. You can definetly hear those but smokey won't be as much of a problem as the SLP or magnapacks. I like MAC for the money but had them on my last stang and the tailpies started rusting after 8 months I know your going with just mufflers but maganflows are alot nicer finish even on the mufflers they are shiny and made I believe the same way as far as the metal go as their tailpipes. Those amcs just look like the mufflers wouldn't last that long. Just my opinion

Magnaflow! Based on your description, I would say that they will give you what you are looking for.

Magnaflow = relatively quiet at idle, loud under moderate acceleration, very loud at W.O.T.

Hello all.
I'm new on these site. Its pretty informative.
Having driven mostly Ford V-8s for twenty years ('66 Fairlane 500 w/289; '79 & '81 Thunderbird; several '80s and '90s Crown Vics, / 302 or 281; '98 Mustang GT; currently '02 Mustang GT) Used everything from glasspacks to Flowmasters. I agree that the flowmasters are to loud for what you are looking for. Anyone her heard of Ravins? Used them on a stock '97 Crown Vic HPP. - A notch above stock but nice deep sound with gas. Put them on my '02 GT. Sounds a little louder at idle but VERY good with the throttle. At highway at constant speed - not blasting out the windows.
Hope I did not make a bad choice, but DEEP sound - not LOUD ws what I wanted. Got it.
I would appreciate some feedback. Its been awhile since I got to get behind the wheel of something other than a grocery getter.
