Mufflers…..Highest flow, least noise?

i have the magnaflow cat with the slp catted x. this combo sounds great to me. it is a much different sound for a mustang. just sounds like a high performance sound. it is also very quiet, which is why i bought it. before i had 40 series and a o/r bassani x pipe. i like this much better. no worry about the cops even when i step on it.

my buddy has the bassani catback and its louder then mine even with the x pipe(catted). as far as air flow capacity i dont know, i just always heard that magnaflow performed well on hp tests.

Alot of people are suggesting Borla mufflers. I just bought a Borla stinger cat back because I was told it would be loud. The Borla's your recomending arent the Stinger, right? I havent installed them yet so I dont know if they are loud or not.

Magnaflows

What about Magnaflows. Not the Magnapacks (now discontinued). They are straight through, but quieter.

Never head them in person, just what I've heard.

I have a Magnaflow C/B set up. It is fairly quiet.

About 10% louder than stock.

This is on a 2004 4.6 GT

i've got Borlas on my saleen from the factory, they sounded great when i bought the car but were too quiet. i thought it was the mufflers and found out it was the cats...put a off road bassani on there and holy cow! my car sounds like a pissed off beast. the borlas will be loud if you put on high flow cats or no cats at all.

back to the original question. my brother had stainless magnaflows on his rousch and even with an OFF ROAD pipe they were too damn quite. he put spin techs on there and they sound great at WOT but are quite the rest of the time. point is that the magnaflows are quiet man, IMO, if you want the performance and the low key tone, than go with magnaflow. spin tech will make a custom system for you too...they have great customer service through the owner.

Just wanted to chime in on this to dispel the notion that Spintechs are quiet. I have the ProStreet series and you can hear me 3 blocks away (I LOVE IT...except around cops where I shift into 3rd instantly to quiet it down). If you want quiet and good performance, go with Magnaflow or Dynomax Super Turbos.

Modular cylinder heads flow in the mid 100's CFM stock, around 200 ported. Ported 4V heads can flow in the 300's. Other high performance pushrod heads can probably do 300's if not a bit more.

What in the name of all things holy are 1000CFM mufflers going to do for you? They're not the bottleneck. If you want quiet, just run the stock mufflers.

What kind of engine is it?

Remember, this is a Cougar, not a Mustang. It's only got a stinkin little 2" catted Y-pipe into sigle 2.25" with dual 2" tail pipe exhaust on it now which seriously inhibits performance N/A and especially blown. If I'm going to upgrade it once, I might as well do it right.

I have a question about what you have said: When they measure flow is it per port or the total of all the ports? In other words, does the stock 2V head flow mid 100's cfm of exhaust total between the 4 ports, or does it flow 4x that number total?

Not sure, but 99% percent of the time, the heads are the restriction. Remember, the only path the air has into and out of the cylinder is a little valve that opens about half an inch at the peak, it spends most of the time transitioning to and from that max rate.

The figures are quoted “per port”. A stock unported '99- up P.I. heads flow 163 cfm intake and 150 cfm exhaust @ .550

Most single stage ported PI's can flow approx 200 cfm intake and 182 cfm exhaust @ .550"

A stage 2 ported PI head will flow 223 cfm intake and 195 cfm exhaust @ .550" with Mod Max valves!

These are figures as quoted by Fox Lake Power Products.

Like I was saying, the stock exhaust might be up to the task of a non-PI headed XR7 like mine with very minor bolt-ons, but since I’m running 9psi through the engine and a set of single stage ported PI heads, I think that a higher flow muffler, capable of beyond 800cfm flow and true dual 2 ½” mandrel bent exhaust is quite warranted......don't you?

I hate to sound like a broken record, but Magnaflow mufflers offer plenty in the form of performance & price (if you are not set on a chambered muffler - then again, I believe Magnaflow also offers a chambered muffler for those who do not like the straight-through sound, check their website for the catalog/info).

G'luck!
