I am trying to find out the difference between the factory mufflers. If your car has a manual trans the muffler tag is Man, if your car has a automatic the tag says Ato.
Other than the tag, what is the difference?

I seem to recall an article about the 2005 Mustang exhaust which said the manual noise is a little louder and more aggressive - never had the two side by side to compare to be honest.

My manual does seem a little louder than the autos I took test drives in. I thought that was because the auto trans didn't always shift as high, but maybe the mufflers are different?

I haven't heard anything like this. It really doesn't make sense to have two different mufflers for the same car. Why would FORD spend extra money on developing 2 different mufflers? It is costly and they get no benefit out of it. it's actually very counterproductive. If this is true FORD is retarded. no one wonder they are in the doghouse. their management sucks ass. their marketing decisions are terrible, except for the truck and v6 stangs, they got nothing holding them together.

They need to start firing guys. their markting team is a bunch of frickin idiots. And of course it has to be approved by the executive board, which makes me think that they don't really give all that much a damn. or they are idiots too. Marketing is tough, but ford has been in the business longer than anyone else, and they stil can't figure it out. They can't figure out how to make a mustang that is competitive with cars out of it's class. It's a piece of cake. They could tune the stang to 340hp, be just as reliable, with a better tuned suspension for about $350 more a car. There's no guess work involved at all. Anyone would pay for that. They would sell even more GT's, steal customers from other companies(mitsu evo and subaru sti and nissan 350), and get a lot more respect and prestige than they currently have. The only thing they got right was the exhaust system. I'm actually rather impressed by it.

I know the stock auto mufflers sound ok with the Pypes O/R H pipe(definitley nothing compared to the Flowmaster Pypes O/R H pipe combo however-that combo will have thinking about hearing loss at certain speeds/RPMs It has a very deep rumble as well). For those looking for a more aggressive sound with no drone and is relatively quiet when you are half throttle or less.

they are a different muffler because they want to limit the drone with an auto tranny. jenn asked me this question a while back, and we had a pretty productive conversation. maybe she remembers more of it than i do.

I took my stock auto mufflers off and replaced them with new manual and the new are Much quieter. My auto's had 10k on them. The manuals have nice polished tips (thats why I changed them). Guess I will have to wait till I have 10k on these to really find out. By then I wont remember or care.

There is no discernible difference between auto and manual/V6 or V8. There was a difference between coupe and convertible due to the sound engineers deciding that folks driving a convertible may not wish to hear as much of the exhaust as coupe drivers. Referencing the part numbers from the 2005 production vehicle, there was a distinguishable difference.

V6: 5R3Z 5230 CA convertible
V6: 4R3Z 5230 HA coupe
GT: 4R3Z 5230 RM coupe

On the interior of the mufflers in the early 2005 mustang convertible had a baffle and resonation chamber design that reduced audible noises from the exhaust.

As Ford ran into the mid-2005 to 2006 model production cycle they had determined it was not cost effective to produce separate mufflers for transmission platforms or chassis designs - coupe or convertible. We now have a single muffler (or at least that is what I was told) for all auto-manual/vert-coupe

As tomustang pointed out in the second to final response in the thread linked above - just because they have a different part number does not mean they are physically different.

Part numbers allow assemblers and mechanics an easy way to order and install parts and for the mfg to keep an inventory on what part is used on which vehicle.

Now, that is the information I have and am welcome to hear counter points.

As for the “sound” this has everything to do with sound amplifications based on overall design of the engine… yada, yada, yada….

For those who care… read this snippet. It has a little more to do with headers. The tranny will impact the exhaust stroke.

Well the Coupe / Convertible makes more sense to me. Thanks for the info.

For now my wife is disappointed, the original mufflers sounded better.
Thanks

No, there was an article in MM&FF when the 2005 first came out. It was about how Ford had worked on the sound of the 2005 exhaust and there was a full article by the Ford acoustic engineer on the principles of getting the right engine note and the fact the SN95 had a longer rear overhang than the S197. I recall very clearly that they said there was a difference between the manual and the auto mufflers as the piece concluded that manual owners might sell their take-offs to auto owners. I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't have lasted long for the obvious reasons (like making two versions of the LS1 for F-Body and Corvette if you know what I mean...) but I know I read it and still have the article somewhere.

One day when I'm not ironing my shoelaces or watching paint dry, I might even dig it out...but I doubt it

Why did you regret it? I'm willing to bet that well over 90% of enthusiasts have changed their exhaust out with no regrets.
