T5 identification

I thought it was already installed in his car and he said he did it 14-15 years ago.

Regardless. Moot point. All we can do is speculate at this point. Would need to drop trans and really inspect certain things to narrow it down.

All we definitively know at this point was the case was cast in 1987. That’s all
Yeah it's already installed which is why I was having the question to see if there was a way to tell while installed. Think you guys pretty much answered it all for now until I can get it out and open it up.

Was mostly curious because reverse is different from the original. After more research from what I'm reading is 87 T5 did not have the synchro in reverse so that would explain the issue i was having.

Assuming its completely stock with not upgrading to the newer gears if they didnt do that but I'm still going to try and pull it to double check.

Take 20 minutes and pull it. 4 bolts for the trans mount cross member, 4 bolts for the trans to bell connection, 4 bolts on the driveshaft if it is still in. Most of us speculating have spent more time responding and typing than it would take to.pull it.

I just pulled a t5 at the wreckers yesterday (driveshaft already out) in about 15 minutes.

Between work and having a 10 month old I don't get much free time . I try to go out between naps to get a little done at a time. Sprayed the exhaust with some kroil last night so hopefully it won't take too much getting it out of the way before getting to the driveshaft.

Main question was answered though, was really just wondering if I had world class or not.

The T5 didn't really get a reverse until around late 1992. It was more of a reverse brake than a synchro, and was prone to the reverse cone having the tabs crack off making it relatively useless.

I believe the world class T5 started to appear in the Mustangs in ‘85. I’ve always gone of these two things to identify a WC T5:

Front Bearing Retainer: Look at the front of the transmission just below the input shaft. On a WC T5, the bearing cup cover is a machined, solid steel surface and will often have the word "Timken" or a part number stamped directly into it. NWC transmissions have a smooth, stamped sheet metal cup or "freeze plug" appearance.

The Side Bolt: On the driver's side of the main case, near the top, look at the retaining bolt. A WC unit uses a star-shaped (Torx) security bolt, whereas NWC units use a standard hex-head bolt.
