Dumb question but is there a way to identify a T5 with it still in the car and tag missing? Only thing I'm finding here are broken links from years ago. Original transmission went out and I picked up a replacement on Craigslist 14 or 15 years ago and can't remember anything. It feels different than the original but no clue what car it came out of. Just trying to see if I can tell what I got and can't see any numbers on it that I can find just looking from underneath.

You could google images of a T5 online. They're pretty distinct.

--or--

You could post images of yours and the dudes will tell ya.
Honestly all the T5 pictures look the same to me . Everything i can find online to identify them are outside the car with the bellhousing off. Wasn't sure if there was a way to tell if it's a world class or not still installed.

I'll try to crawl under and get some pictures. It's pretty nasty under there after sitting in a humid garage 14 years

I don't think you can tell what version of the transmission you have without either having it out of the car and opening it up or having the tag.

In any event, this is a link that I find most helpful for ID'ing T5s. Maybe it could help you?

Okay, so you bought a car 14/15 years ago that has been holding a transmission for future use (you said trans was still in the car). You have no clue what that car was (year, engine).

If the trans is to use elsewhere, just pull it and take some pics and post here - its worth a shot.

There is a date code cast into the side case of the T5. While I realize at this point many T5s have been rebuilt a few times, so it’s not definitive, it’s one way to at least try to narrow down what year the T5 is front.

The date code will be a circle with a 2-digit number in it.

I bought the car in 03 as my first car then drove it daily until around 2010 when he transmission went out. Bought a transmission and new tires but never got around to installing. Had a spare truck to drive so I just parked the car, plates expired, life got in the way and car sat since then. Recently decided to get it back on the road so just slowly fixing things.

Can't remember the add really just said something along the lines of used mustang T5 transmission for $250.

Found a date, looks like 87 to me so assuming it should be a world class T5.

Yes. Likely an 87-89 spec T5 rated for 265 ft-lbs.

Of course, not guaranteed. Would need to open to confirm the gearset. Wasn’t uncommon to put the 90+ guts in these during a rebuild back when the gearsets were pretty cheap.
Might be a while before I can get it out to look. It definitely has something wrong with grinding going into reverse so rebuild will be in the future

NeoMustang just posted a video (or maybe it was old but just showed up on my feed) of putting a GForce gear set (and case) in a T5. Supposedly holds 500hp. That would be pretty cool. Said the GForce case was hard to find though.

I did see that pop up as well. Haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Or just look at the input shaft and if the tip where it engages the pilot bushing/bearing measures 0.590” it’s a four cylinder and I believe 0.668” for the V8 T5.

I am assuming OP did an simple swap when he installed it and dodn't need to do anything special. That alone suggests to me the trans is a mustang application, and since he did not mention excessive vibration and not changing pilot bearings it's likely not a 4-banger T5.

I mean it could be...but just going off the info given at this point.

I don't remember the add specifying what engine was in the car it came out of but it did go strait in mine with no issues

Op is looking to swap an unknown T5 into a V8 car that already has a T5.

I thought it was already installed in his car and he said he did it 14-15 years ago.

Regardless. Moot point. All we can do is speculate at this point. Would need to drop trans and really inspect certain things to narrow it down.

All we definitively know at this point was the case was cast in 1987. That’s all
