hey guys, noob here at the forum. i'm looking for some advice/opinions about this. I don't have the cash for a full cat back system, so I was hoping to just replace my stock mufflers with some aftermarket (preferably Borla chambered) mufflers. Have any of you guys done this or had a muffler shop do it? Does it require a lot of fabrication? And if not the Borlas, are there any aftermarket mufflers out there that are pretty much a straight up replacement? I'm looking for a little more rumble than stock, but something that doesn't drone at highway speeds. Thanks for the info.

Welcome to Stangnet!

Swapping just the mufflers is a simple swap for any exhaust shop, or even yourself with a hacksaw (or other appropriate cutting tool) and some clamps.

If you don't want the drone, stay away from the chambered type mufflers.

I would just save up for full exhaust. If you don't do it now, you'll end up doing it later . Once you start modding, you're hooked.

Thats what i did, you wont gain much performance wise but i think my car sounds awesome with welded in flowmasters...it was like 250 for this i think...but i guess you are looking for a different sound.

Alright.. I tried to restrain myself, but can't. Borla sounds like ass. Back when I owned my Chevy Beretta, Borla exhaust was the talk of that community. I can't get over associating Borla with 4 banger Chevy's since then.

well, i was originally going to go with the Bassani mufflers, but I saw that they only have 2.5" diameter in/out, where the Borla had the 2.25" in/out diameter, same as the stock Mustang exhaust. Can you make a 2.5" muffler work with a 2.25" exhaust system?

yes, any competent muffler shop can make that work. If they cant, they shouldnt be a muffler shop.

You can buy adapter pieces yourself if you prefer.. any exhaust shop or probably even Autozone would have them.
