Mustang Performance

Ok I think I'm trading my friend my '90 300ZX N/A for his '96 Mustang GT anyway I was just curious about the performace that I can expect out of the 4.6L... I know its faster than my 300, plus mine is an automatic and his is a 5 speed so that helps alittle... but how fast will it be stock?? and what are some low cost upgrades (100-200) that I could make it faster with???

3.73 or 4.10 gears would wake it up quite a bit for under 550 bucks (after speedo calibration).. next mod would be the PI (performance improved) Head Swap which would add about 30ish hp, which is about 1,200 i believe

PI headswap will net close to 50rwhp. Headswapped 96-98 GT's will gain more because of their higher compression ratio. Although headswapping would net around 50 or so rwhp, they ave much more potential as far as other mods go.

I would say YES trade him! You get a car that is 6 years newer, is faster, and has more potential. Maybe you could trade just for a week to see if you like the Stang better

You know the funny thing is that my car is worth just about what his is and its 6 years older with alot more miles... my friend has a 92 Z-28 with some mods like a stall (automatic), k&n filter, exhaust, and that car is pretty freakin fast he beat a SVT Cobra with some mods... so is there any hope that without thousands of dollars worth of upgrades I could hang with him?

and what all would some cobra head do for the car???

WEll a 92 Z-28 isn't anything special. I believe that would have been either the 305 TPI or the 350 TPI - both motors were only any good as boat anchors. Are you sure the cobra was racing? Also, it would depend on the year cobra. A 95 cobra isn't anything great. 250 HP! WOO! 96-98 Cobras made 305 HP and the 99-01 Cobras make 320. With some serious mods there is no way a TPI Z-28 could beat one.
Anyway, with good driving and some well chosen mods 95 cobras won't be a problem. LT1 and LS1 camaros will eat you alive unless you do the PI headswap. With exhuast, gears, and some intake mods you could hang with LT1's but the LS1's will still take your lunch money.
I'd get the GT and then save up for a headswap. It's well worth it. Or you could always drop in a DOHC motor. It's not really that hard.
