As some of you may remember I had a post under the title "Learning to Street Rod" a few months back. I have since moved the blog to a new URL where I could run better coding and do my own PHP development.

As far as progress goes on the 64 1/2 Mustang the mustang 2 crossmember is in place along with the upper and lower control arms. The front disc are in place but no calipers yet. The side drip rails have been taken off and welded up to create a wonderful smooth look. The back seat is no longer going to be put in, in its place will be a storage box, which will also serve for speaker placement.

So apparently we've filled in the spot for the taillights.

So we now has an idea of using a C&C machine and making some custom taillights. We may also fill in the spot for the gas tank and do something there. Here is a quick photoshop idea, I need to do it with the actual panel.

Here is a Thanks Giving Day update. The car is entirely primered and the <a href="http://www.mustangsplus.com/xcart/product.php?productid=2416&amp;cat=2366&amp;page=1" target="_blank">ground effects kit</a> from MustangsPlus.com has arrived. The engine (5.0 w/ EFI and AOD transmission) should be arriving this Saturday. You can see in the pictures that the rear seat is gone and in its place is a storage box crafted from plywood. The rear taillights have been filled in, and soon we should have a Pony shaped taillight put in their place once we get the C&C work done. We have also put in the new 22 gallon gas tank. We should be doing the engine mounts soon as well and after that paint will be forthcoming.

We got the engine and transmission today. To my surprise it is a 5.0 HO, I only thought it would be a standard 5.0.

We did the engine mock up today, but we need to call the shop because the engine mounts we bought are not entirely lining up with cross member.

The engine looks like it has some miles, but we're not sure about a rebuild. I am pushing for one. How much horsepower do engines tend to lose over time?

You'll want to do at a minimum a compression and leakdown test to verify the condition of the motor.

If those come up ok, at a minimum you'll want to pull the oil pan and at least replace the oil pump driveshaft with a hardened one. Better yet, put in a new pump and driveshaft. Cheap insurance against failure down the road (driveshafts are notoriously bad on 5.0s).

Can't hurt to also pull the main bearing caps to see what condition they're in. Can check the rod bearings as well.

Also throw in a new rear main seal while you're at it since they all end up leaking at one point or another.

Any suggestions for bolt-ons that work for the 5.0 in the classics? Or do most of the fox body bolt ons for the 5.0 work?
 
Basically all the bolt-ons for a Fox will work. I'm even using a Fox cold-air kit (filter ends up where the battery used to be before I relocated to trunk). This may vary with the MFR and intake... Anything that bolts directly to the engine should fit as the blocks are all the same. You may have to get creative with routing of coolant hoses for some of the intakes though.

Headers I'd advise sticking with models that fit your year of car. I've got long-tubes with bungs welded into the headers for the O2 sensors and it works great. If you need to lengthen the O2 sensor leads to fit the headers you put on, remember to do it on the car side of the harness, not on the sensor itself.

Thats good to know about the cold-air kit because we are relocating the battery as well. Anything we need to look at for the AOD transmission to fix or replace?
 
So I'm not sure if the 5.0 HO and AOD came with the computer from the car we got it out of. Any suggestions for places to purchase a replacement computer?

Also what do we want to do in terms of the AOD. What should we replace or look at with this transmission.
 
Transmission were not computer controlled until I think 94. As long as your trans is not an AODE and actually an AOD it shouldn't be a big deal. With the ECU, as long as it is a pre 94 there wont be an issue as far as I know. You can ask in the 5.0 tech forums if you want to be sure, they know. I believe the ECUs have different setings but I think they both work. I know for a fact in 94 they went to a different ingition system and a more complex ECU so you can't interchange those with the earlier setups anyways.
