Mustang "Sport"

As I was sitting at a stop light today, a new Thunderbird drove by and an idea hit me... What would you guys think of a Mustang that was a two-seater? A car that would look like a Mustang, but would be well, "shorter"?

Just imagine this for a second. A Miata or BMW M3 sized Mustang with a V8, and possibly a race inspired suspension. How insane would that be?

As I thought about it a little more during the day it seemed semi-logical for Ford. They have "adjusted" a car before. Look at the Explorer "sport-trac" it's an "adjusted" car they have came up with. Maybe Ford could use this idea as their "SE" Mustang type in maybe 5-10 years to boost the Mustang popularity again? The could simply just call it the "Mustang Sport"... or be fancy with it and call it a "Mustang SE" or go BMW style and call the the "M2" meaning "M"ustang and "2" seater.... I would also like to add that Ford would still have the regular 4 seat Mustang available too.

Have I just lost my mind and need to be put into a mental ward? Or do you think this could work?

the mustang is a 2 seater. who is realisticly gonna ride in the back seat? a midget? there better be a midget driving too. they say the mustang is bigger compared to the fox body, but there is still no room for back seat passengers in the real world. someone will come out with a tonneau cover for the rear seats for a convert soon, i can almost guarantee you that. maybe that will be the sport.

The Mustang is the hottest car in the world right now, does it really need a boost in popularity? I'd personally avoid labeling a roadster with any form of the Mustang title. The concept stang (2 seater) was tight, tho. But smaller...why not just bring back the thunderbird in that form?

The orginal mustang prototype in the early 60s was a a two seater roadster they scraped it and made it 2+2 4 seater afordable sports car, and they got the best car in the world an icon, so i don't have a problem with the mustang and i belive they shouldn't mess with it, they can play around with another car, like another ford, linclon or mercury but not the Stang, sorry

There is no other car in the world that I can think of. That has a 4 seat and a 2 seat version. Sure the backseats in a mustang are only so that it isn't black carpet behind the drivers seat. But why would you want a shorter mustang. It would look something like this.

that is the dumbest thhing i have ever seen, needed to shorten more than just the cabin of the car if going that route....

Actually AMC did it in 68, 69 and 70 with the 4 seat Javelin and 2 seat AMX. Beautiful cars. In 71 The 2 seat body was dropped and the Javelin was available with an AMX option package.You could ultimately order a 401CID 4SPD.

The 350Z is a two-seater, the Infiniti G35 (which pretty much is the same car otherwise) is a 2+2 coupe or a sedan.

But they were not both named javelin or AMX. Which was my whole point. And yes the G35 and 350Z are nearly the same. But once again they do not share the name. They are also marketed in the united states by 2 different nameplates. While not 2 different companies. They are not (At least in my area) sold at the same dealerships.

I hear what you say, but the 'Sport' in auto terms only ever means you have to be a sport to buy it and it isn't going to be a fast car - Vauxhall 1.6i Astra Sport, it just means entry level budget mobil!

However your logic is correct if the stang could shed about 600kg (1320lbs) it would make it a real serious performance car just like these:

TVR Tomaro, all aluminium 3.6 litre Straight 6 350bhp and under 1100kg (2420lbs) = very fast

or

Marcus TSO 5.7 LS1 V8 450bhp and just over 1100kg = even faster

Two responses to your 2-seat mustang:
1) go back and take a look at the concept coupe-that was an incredible looking car
2) a bargain-priced; 300 lb lighter track stang avail to the public

Maybe an after mkt entrepreneur will not only mod the engine but do some lipo suction to create more performance-imagine adding25-50hp and reducing weight by 2-300 lbs.

Well, I don't like the idea of a shorter Mustang, but I do like the 2-seater idea. However, will you really be gaining that much of a weight advantage? If you look at the T-Bird, there is that semi-circle space between the front seats and the trunk, therefore, even if the Mustang was "shorter" it wouldn't be like the back of the front seats hit the trunk. In my opinion, you really aren't taking away that much meat. If it was strictly for looks, that's a whole other discussion

I agree-I'd like to know what the concept coupe weighed-probably little if any difference, but it looked really nice.

I'd love to hear about any tonneau covers for the vert. I've seen some late 60's T-bird verts that had a tonneau cover that turned them into two-seaters? Those looked pretty nice.

I think if it becomes any sportier (smaller) then the car would lose the muscle car name, i can't seem to grasp the idea of a 2 seater muscle car, the only car that can get away with it is a shelby cobra, muscle cars look aggrsive not small and cute.

is this agressive enough? But is it Sports or Muscle or both (0-100mph takes 8.5 seconds!!!!!!!!)

Just FYI - Nissan 300Z's were available as both a 2 seater and a 2+2 with 4 seats.

But I think a 2 seater Mustang is against its muscle car heritage. And also, I think to make it look 'right' and to realize any real advantages, it would have to be modified to the point where it would almost be a whole separate car -- very expensive.

Ford has had many fresh and cool 2-seater concept cars that I would like to see instead of trying to morph the extremely well designed 05 Mustang into a 2-seater.
