Mustangs, Babies, Infant Seats......What to expect?

After nine years of trying to have a baby, my wife and I have finally found success. The excitement and anticipation is unreal.

To make a long story short, both of us are very healthy and the medical profession has been stumped. We've been to a series of doctors, specialists, and other organizations I didn't realize existed. The good news is that all is good so far without a single hint of negative or cautious news/test results. Needless to say, we've had plenty of time to get our finances straight, both have good jobs, buy a house, and pay off at least one car.


On to the Mustang part........

Infant car seats........is this actually possible, especially if twins are in order?

Sell the stang.......it was paid off 6 years ago, so that's not really necessary.

Air bags........1st generation air bags do not give me warm fuzzies, however, maybe this isn't a major concern until kids are too big for the backseat.

Daily Driver...........nope. My wife's Jeep is the daily driver. The stang is for fun, weekends, and emergencies.


For those who have gone through this transition or know others who have, I would be gratefully appreciative of any advice, warning, or other stuff to consider. Please tell me that most people do not sell their stangs at the prospect of having children.

I remember seeing a 96 Cobra coupe shortly after I got married and it had a car seat in the back. Then and there I had assurance that my stang could possibly be a viable vehicle for a family.

It seems that infants aren't going to be that big of a deal, but as kids get older and not quite ready for the front seat, things will get tight. Not a problem. Just want to know that when one or more children are involved, the stang is still a viable option.

Thankfully my wife has a Grand Cherokee, because that's as close to a minivan as I'll ever get.

Of course, my suspension/exhaust might not set well with the little ones. My wife seems to think the exhaust will put them to sleep quickly. I'm not sure on the suspension, but maybe the little bumps and whatnot will actually turn out to be a positive thing.

My girl loved the vert with the top down (no hwy - just streets in the hood). TOp up hwy fine. Car seat fits GREAT. Booster seat fits well too. I am hesitant though and EXTRA careful if I drive her in it now. Why? Remember the gas tank problem with the pinto's? We have nearly the SAME exact issue. Hit in the back and tendency to explode...in a vert sometimes the doors jam shut too causing an impossibility to get out.. It has left several people burning to death in the back seats and front. You can get a special tank (which I will end up getting one day) that is bulletproof and is much less likely to explode or leak ($600-$1000). JUST warning you to be watchful AND careful with that child in the car.

Are you talking about the larger 20 gallon Fuel Safe tank? I've looked into this, but not sure if it would fit with my suspension and tailpipes. I'd love to have the extra fuel capacity, let alone safety.

Is that what you're speaking of? If so, it would be awesome if that would fit with my Bassani catback and rear suspension mods.


More on topic of safety: I can't imagine speeding or doing anything unsafe with kids in the car. Gotta have a different frame of mind. I see people with babies and small children all the time doing stupid stuff all the time. Atlanta is not a very friendly driving place to say the least.

The wife and I dont have any mini-me's yet...plan to in a few years when the wife is out of college or at least close to finishing.

I know of a couple that had (was totaled about a year ago) 2 kids and a 95 mustang. The kids are about 1.5-2yrs apart but they got by fine and they always had a car all could fit in together like a 4door or minivan. The owner was reading an article that the 94-04 mustang is actually a very safe car for children/passengers in all kinds of accidents..as long as speeding is not to great.

Fight that minivan crap. Thank god my wife hates them just as much as I do.

And yes, my wife can't tolerate the idea of a minivan either. Even SUVs aren't very cool with her, however, there is just something about the Jeep that she likes a lot. To me, it seems lighter than most other SUVs and does not seem as huge. Throw in a V8 and all is well.
