My 5.4 Sleeper (Not Done Yet)

My Goal is 400 rwhp all motor. And then run the Vortec with 14+ lb of Boost. Also to add i put the quietest performance mufflers avalible on my car. I got dynomax super turbo's they are so queit with my current setup i have o/r x-pipe and you still cant even hear the car it is almost as quiet as stock HEHE!

It is out of a Ford F-250 Light Duty. It has a Steel Crank and all the other beefed up goodies a truck motor has.
Unless you put one in there, Its likely to have a Nodular Iron Crank in it. There's nothing beefed up about a truck motor in comparison to your run of the mill 4.6L, I'm sorry to say. Same hypereutectic pistons, same cracked cap rods.

Well i know for a fact mine has a steel crank. Pistons and rods dont matter they are being changed
I'd double check the Crank Shaft itself if I were you. I know wikipedia states they had a forged crankshaft in them, but they've been known to generalize before. Other sources I've found stated how previous 5.4L's used a Nodular Iron version and the Lightning’s were the only 2V's to get them.

Just to make sure, I'd run the part number if I were you. I could be wrong, but it couldn't hurt to check. Either way, it's not going to matter. A 2V 5.4L isn't a real "rev happy" engine to begin with and unless you're making over 600+rwhp, you're not going to have to worry about damaging a modular crank shaft anyway.

….but yeah. The pistons and Rods are crap. I’d recommend Manley Rods and Diamond Pistons in place of the crappy stockers. :)

that 5.4 won't fit under the stock hood. you can minimize it's height with a 99+ cobra intake and adapter plates. if you use the stock intake it will sit 6" above the stock hood. adapter plates and a PI intake is ~2" higher than stock 4.6.

a cobra 'r' was 5.4 4V not 2v.

even lightning rotating assembly is weak. 04+ cranks are all steel. some are forged depending on the build sheet of the individual truck. wide parting/casting flash lines indicate forging. cracked cap 5.4 rods are good for 6000 rpm with N/A. supposedly lightning rods are good for 400 rwhp.
i know for a fact that 04+ rods are good for 425 rwhp and 5400 rpm. at least they are so far.

factory forged steel 5.4 cranks are good for 8200 rpm. so says Al Papito. i never checked mine. i forgot.

my final intake will be ~1/2" - 1" lower than my current and use the twin 57mm mark viii TB i got with the 4v.

it's a good thing you are boosting it. you would be embarrased of the 5.4 2v power otherwise.

Question: Why dont people import aussie 5.4l engines? Even if it cost anf extra grand in shipping it would seem worth it.

the aussie is essentially the same triton motor trucks have. it has an intake that fits under car hoods. same runner length and power is within 15 hp of the truck. i wanted the aussie intake at first, but aluminum has it's own drawbacks, and i modified mine for short runners anyway.

Bill, I've been very impressed with your posting lately. I've been able to read your reply’s from beginning to end without any trouble and haven't needed someone else to translate them for me once. :nice:
