My build plan

I Have a 95 Mustang that had a 94 GT 5.0 swapped in, and the auto transmission :notnice: that was at least beefed up on it's rebuild last year. It does have posi, although I'm not sure what gears. I'm assuming stock on how it drives, planning on doing the driveshaft/ wheel test when I get home.

Car runs good, but has a little white smoke at idle, and can puff a good cloud at WOT which also creates a rattle noise that during normal driving never happens. I'm crossing my fingers in hopeing the bottom end is in good shape, as I don't plan on digging that deep with this build.

My build is currently planned on staying around $3k not including the tune...
Trickflow H/C/I 350hp kit from summit racing: $2,400
30lb Fuel Inectors $240
70MM TFS Throttle Body $150
255lph Fuel Pump $130
TFS Lifters (unsure of type) $120?
BBK Headers $150

Now my car is stock as far as I know aside from cold air intake, off road x-pipe, and series 40 exhaust. My brother in law convinced me to do this build, since he had done it to his foxbody and said it made his car pretty snotty. I've read up a lot on it, but am having trouble finding tips on certain things. He told me he'd be able to do this swap with me in one weekend, and to just buy all the parts. The biggest job I've ever done on a car is a valve adjustment on my M3. So Cams/ head etc is new to me, I want to make sure I have everything covered when I buy everything for my build.

My biggest question is I was told to get new lifters when doing the H/C/I swap in. What would you suggest as far as type, brand, and why? Other then that any tips while doing this build... I'm new to the whole 302 game, or even American engines in general. Should I replace anything else while having the head off, while staying reasonable with the build?

First of all, add another $1K to your budget for incidentals.

That's a good setup for making power. Valve adjustment is easy on this car. New lifters are not required, but they are recommended. Original Motorsport lifters are honestly the best. A full set is $119 on Summit and Jeg's. Good idea to check your pushrod geometry with the Trick Flow heads. Sometimes they require longer pushrods. You will also need an intake elbow for an SN car. The Trick flow kit is setup for a foxbody, and the throttle body is in a different location. The elbow is about $130....I think.

3K budget is for all the basic parts. I understand a few things will likely turn up... kind of hoping I have all my parts lined up, with few hiccups along the way. About to pick up a cheap winter beater tomorrow, so the build won't necessarily be limited to a quick weekend. I'll update with pictures/ results once I start to dig into it. Just have to sell my bike first to help fund this...

I'm sure there are a million things I'm forgetting, but the bar at the hotel here had Fat Tire on tap, and I kind of got carried away. On a Fox body, the IAT is in the lower intake, whereas the SN has it in the inlet pipe. Since that intake is designed for a Fox body, you will need to get a plug for the lower intake. Can't remember the size. Or you can just get a spare IAT, and lob the top of it off and stick it in the lower intake.

^Is that the intake adapter you mentioned?

appreciate the help

Found two good deals locally (used).
AFR 165 Heads for $600 (only 6k miles on them, and cleaned up)
Trick Flow track heat upper & lower intake manifolds $300
Now, this would save me ALOT of $... not sure if they'd work well together, and would I be able to just plug and play the rest of the part numbers from the trick flow kit to fill in the rest of the parts (cam etc) to make this work?

Missing from the list is a MAF cal'ed for the 30# injectors. Also, our sn95's are notorious for idle issues and not taking to cam/heads very well, so you might want to plan on a chip and tune. The chip is $200-400 depending if you want just one tune or the ability to switch between multiple tunes. Then you'll need to get the car actually tuned by someone who knows what they are doing. This usually includes dyno time so it can get pretty spendy. The other option is a place like dirtydirtyracing.com which is an internet tune. You send him a list of your mods, he sends you a chip with a tune on it. Other tuning options include tweecer R/T or anderson, but you'll be dropping alot of coin for those and there is a pretty large time investment there as well. eectuning.org can get you more info on tuning also.

Oh how I wish everything really was "plug and play" but with every car project I have ever done, there are hiccups.

Also, AFR are some of the best heads out there and they are usually pretty higher in the price range than that. Be very leary about "good deals" don't want to see a fellow stanger ripped off. Don't get me wrong, those deals are out there, but I tend to follow the "if it sounds too good to be true, it usally is" rule (thanks Mom)! If you end up with those heads and TF intake they can run fine in tandem, just remember, the TF h/c/i was designed to work together and a lot of people have had great results with that combo.

Next word of advice, do your homework! Do yourself a favor and heavily research Ford Explorer intakes and combos. There are tons of folks who have made the Explorer conversion with just as good success as TF package at a fraction the cost.

Basically, I would recommend doing a TON of websurfing here, and other places and see what has worked for people and what hasn't. Also good to know what other people have run into on their builds so you can know what to expect.

Good luck and welcome to the blue oval family!
