So I just put 4.10s in my car, and an electric fan, and hit woodburn today, with some sad results. Here is my best time:

R/T: .144
60 2.262
330 6.365
1/8 9.7
mph 74.17
1000 12.545
1/4 15.079
mph 84.74

This is pathetic!! even with 4.10s, I cant break out of 15s. I got a good launch, hardly any tirespin, and shifted it perfect at 5000 every time. It really sagged in the topend, and I can deal with that, I expected it, but the 60' time I am pretty dissapointed with.

So, I think I'm going to drop a cam in it, and some better heads. If I dont get a decent time out of it, I'm going with a new motor, or a new car altogether. This thing is cursed!!

PI head swap is really hard on a 5.0L

Seriously though..lets hit the track and see whats going on. As far as bolt on's go, the car should be faster, but we need to see whats actually holding it back. It could be lots of things, and we have never done the "look it over and tell me what to do next" with it yet.

Coolio, thanks man. Next time your heading out to the track, let me know. If anything, I think I need to go up to PIR (more stangs there it seems) and see what everyone else is doing.

We are usually there Friday nights, and some Saturdays. For now, I would concentrate on finding the problems and not throwing parts at it. Tossing heads and a cam without first figuring out whats going on wont help.

C'ya out there!

are you the one with the maroon colored mustang GT?

I was the one with the red 68 mustang. I am still tuning the mustang and was trying to get it to work with nitrous. Unfortunately the nitrous solenoids are not functioning as they should.

So I was running all motor, I think I am running too rich but I have the base timing set pretty good. So I am gonna back off the fuel pressure and try again sometime soon. Best we got out of the mustang was 13.336 at little over 102mph.

We are trying to tweak the mustang to get it hit high 12's on all motor. But low 12's or high 11's on nitrous. I feel the need to put in built reverse manual C-4 in it......

For your car, I think a set of heads would really wake it up. But probably need to check all components and tuning.

I'll be there! I'll listen to your advice, and try to learn what I can. I'll even let you run it if you want.

On one run, I felt the clutch slip pretty bad, so I laid off it. The other runs it grabbed perfect. I'm still not sure whats going on with that thing, but that might be a part worth throwing at it! ha ah. The clutch has always behaved strangely in this car.

And I was the one drooling as you drove by. I remember your car, it sounds really good, that sucks about the nitrous. Next time I see you out there, I'll find ya and say hi.

Yeah, I do need to get another set of eyes on it. Everything seems to be in tune, I got the fuel dialed in where I like it, and timed perfect, but it still seems flat in the upper end, which is why I'm wondering about flow. As my times show, its clear something isnt right.

Believe it or not, I'm thinking about throwing the stock throttle body back on it and making a couple passes, and shifting a little lower. If I get significant gains from that, It will confirm my theory. As I always say, I'm a computer guy and not a mechanic, but I try my best. I'll definitely head out to PIR next friday and see what I can learn from jeff and others.

Before you go....

How old are the plugs? wires?

cap? rotor?

fuel filter?

cleaned the air filter lately?

cleaned the batt terminals lately?

flushed the cooling system lately?

last oil change? type?

tranny fluid?

tire pressure? type?

removed the air silencer?

how much timing?

had any work done to the car? no not parts, ...like a/c repair, or anything done at a shop? There might be a vac line off, or cracked (88 is gettin on in age) etc...

Whatever, J & J will find it and fix it.

you know also if you dont have a set of good tires you times will never get to be that good. i dont know if your running slicks or not but when it comes to the track even the best street tire sucks.

you can see what my car has done to it in my sig.
and the best i could do with street tires was a 14.2 at 97mph, my car should be in the 13s somewere but i also have a converter that locks up really soon, and no heads. but anyways dont throw the towel in just yet find what the problem is first , and i bet its something really small. and if your not running good tires do that first.

I had a lot of traction issues with last set of tires, but the new ones hook up better. Of course maybe thats because I'm not applying enough power to them! ha ah. They did hook up good yesterday though, only a small chirp during launch and shifting into 2nd.

You have enough power to run 14's now, but your car is making far less power than it should, as evidenced by the 84mph trap speed. I would replace your fuel filter, first. You are down at least 10 mph relative to a normal 5.0 Mustang. I assume you set your timing at 14?

i think you should be in the mid 14's with those mods. the t-body is definately not right for the combo but it shouldnt hurt you. id do all the regular maintenance stuff that was posted above and see if that makes a diff. also run some injector cleaner through it or maybe even try some seafoam.

The only thing I haven't done in D's checklist is the fuel filter. I havent changed it out, but everything else I've done.

Oil change about 1000 ago, 20/50
tires: 25psi
Timing 14 degrees

I'm going to hobble out to PIR this week and run it again, and tweak with it.

you might get away with puting your timing at 16*, thats were mine is and its amazing how much she woke up. but only do that if your running 92 oct or higher. try that and if you dont here any dettination (pinging ) your good on that . my car is bone stock and this is not to rub it in or anything but its got stock heads and bottom end the only thing motor wise is a b cam . my best time was a 14.2 with a 60' time of 2.14 .my times were on street tires and i have an aod with a converter that bogs down once i hit drive.

your car will atleast be in and around 14s or mabe even 13s. i had a buddy who was bone stock except exhaust and slicks and his went 13.55 . but try uping your timming it might add alittle more umf. garry

I'll be out there friday night, and probably tweaking with it on saturday!

I am starting to think its the clutch more and more. Getting some good slipping occassionally.

Check your adjustment. Is it catching really high? If so, a quadrant etc, might be in order. If you are having the kind of trouble that would substantially worsen your time, you should be able to smell the clutch after a pass.

With friends like Mischa, who needs enemies? ha ha. Yeah you can run the car if you want, even though you make fun of me so much. Find me out there and take it for a spin.

Its very difficult to explain. Some say its all in my head, but I'm tellin ya its there. There are times when you really get on it, that it just falls on its face, and then "hooks up" and flies. At that point, I sometimes smell clutch.I did one run last time at woodburn (16.5 et) that I really felt it slip, and at that time I smelled asbestos.

I've tried doing a pedal adjust, and it helps, but only temporarily. A quadrant cable is something I've been meaning to do, but forgotten about, thanks for the reminder. It may solve the problem altogether, I know the clutch isnt "finished", it just hooks up funny sometimes.

I thought it was the trac-loc, because I saw after doing some burnouts (on a closed course, professional driver HAHA) that one tire mark was definitely darker. However, I had AFP replace it the tracloc, and now the tire tracks are equal (again closed course) and there doesn't appear to be any problems with the rear end. However, I do feel a "slip" quite frequently. The only other thing it could be is the clutch, afaik.
