I have done a few searches and can't find anyone describing my problem.

I have a 1990 GT and it has this really loud and annoying whine. I bought the car about three months ago and it hasn't been driven much because of various issues. Here is the deal. I took it in to have the rear end rebuilt completely. The guy who did it does very good work. He goes in and replaces everything, including the 3.73s because the old ones were in bad shape. I get the car back and there is a loud whining coming from what sounds like the transmission. So I yank the transmission (Tremec 3550) and take it to the same guy to have him go through it to see if anything was wrong like a bearing or maybe excessive play in the input shaft. He checked it over and found nothing wrong. Everything looked good. So I go ahead and change the pilot bearing, rear main seal, got the fly wheel resurfaced, new FMS HD clutch, new ujoints for the aluminum drive shafter (just in case), and put it all back together. The whine is still there.

The whine only happens from 40mph and up in 4th and 5th gears. It actually changes pitch the faster you go. If I push in the clutch the whine goes away totally. Its not normal tranny whine, and it's so loud that you can't drown it out with the radio. It would seam that if it was a bad bearing that it would whine regardless of having the clutch pushed in. And it doesn't sound like rear end whine. I had a buddy sit in the back seat and to him it sounds like its coming from the tranny. Sorry for the long post, but any ideas or help are greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!!

Gear whine? Just a guess, Ive never heard gear whine but seeing as when you press the clutch it stops, and it changes pitch the faster you go, it may be an option.

So if you push the clutch (coasting) in the wine goes away? I dont think it's a gear wine if you push the clutch in and it goes away. If it was a gear wine it would do it regardless of if the clutch was in or not. I think pilot bearing or throw out bearing? Does it wine at idol? If so does it do it in or out of gear idoling? Um didnt you say you replaced the rear main seal? Did you put a new pilot bearing in? peace

New pilot bearing. The old one was toast. This only really happens in 3rd 4th or 5th at 40mph and up. New thow out bearing that came with the HD clutch. This was doing this before all the new stuff was put in. It also has an Auburn Pro that might be bad... But it really sounds like its coming from the transmission.

If it was doing this before all the new stuff including the gear install. I would check all of the mounts and bolts. Could be that during a load placed on the engine/drivetrian a bad missalignment of the components could cause a whine through the drive line.
Press in the clutch and the load is taking off of the components. Check around the engine/trans for loose bolts or bad mounts.
Also, does it only happen at the MPH or is it with RPM?

Now tht you said that I realised my thinking was dumb, I pictured when you pushed the clutch in engine is disconnected and everything stops, didnt think if you're coasting the rear end is still spinning lol.

Not sure about the 40 in the second gear... I'll check tomorrow... I have replaced the motor mounts, added a poly trans mount. And just to clarify...The whine sound wasn't there before the rear end rebuild. It came when I got it back. It really doesn't sound like the rear end whine. I have had 3.73s in three mustangs I've owned. All with a little bit of gear whine and this just sounds different.

Thanks guys for all the help!!

try cruising at a sustained speed in second, then shift to third, fourth, fifth and see if the whine goes away completely in a certain gear or just slowly fades out with each shift.

If you can push the clutch in and the noise goes away that does not necessarily mean the problem isn't the rear end.....load whether it be accel/drag can cause the "whine" noise if it is too far out of adjustment.

So you state here that if ya push the clutch in the wine goes away? Right? So i would say it's in the tranny? If you push the clutch in at these 40mph and above speeds does it still go away? Try this all at 40 mph and in all these gears mentioned above 1: push in clutch but leave in gear coasting, 2: push clutch in take out of gear and let off clutch basicly coast in nutral see what that gets ya? But i'm gonna say it's the tranny? Try this also get it up to 40 mph take it out of gear and give it a quick rev see what that does also? Any way you can put up a vid of this happening form outside the car? Maybe on a drive by? peace

Okay, today I tried a few things. As long as the car is coasting, regardless of the clutch being in or out, the noise completely disapates. It's still present during acceleration, but not as loud. Between 40 and 55mph its the loudest. After about 70mph it doesn't get louder, just higher pitched. Doesn't matter what gear you are in 3rd 4th or 5th. When shifting, as soon as the clutch disengages, the sound goes away till the clutch is re-engaged. Im thinking its got to be the rear end.
