I have done a few searches and can't find anyone describing my problem.
I have a 1990 GT and it has this really loud and annoying whine. I bought the car about three months ago and it hasn't been driven much because of various issues. Here is the deal. I took it in to have the rear end rebuilt completely. The guy who did it does very good work. He goes in and replaces everything, including the 3.73s because the old ones were in bad shape. I get the car back and there is a loud whining coming from what sounds like the transmission. So I yank the transmission (Tremec 3550) and take it to the same guy to have him go through it to see if anything was wrong like a bearing or maybe excessive play in the input shaft. He checked it over and found nothing wrong. Everything looked good. So I go ahead and change the pilot bearing, rear main seal, got the fly wheel resurfaced, new FMS HD clutch, new ujoints for the aluminum drive shafter (just in case), and put it all back together. The whine is still there.
The whine only happens from 40mph and up in 4th and 5th gears. It actually changes pitch the faster you go. If I push in the clutch the whine goes away totally. Its not normal tranny whine, and it's so loud that you can't drown it out with the radio. It would seam that if it was a bad bearing that it would whine regardless of having the clutch pushed in. And it doesn't sound like rear end whine. I had a buddy sit in the back seat and to him it sounds like its coming from the tranny. Sorry for the long post, but any ideas or help are greatly appreciated!!
