i am a great tech but i am perplexed................the odometer and trip meter quit working,,,the speedo works great but is sucks w/o my trip meter not working..i bought another 96 cluster off ebay and installed it,,same prob ...speedo good buy no trip or milage counter...is it just possible i bought another bad cluster or is there something i am missing? i know about the fix kit that is sold and all .....just wanted to know if anybody knows if this is a mechcanial prob or some other type of fix before i buy this stupid kit ....thanks of any help in this matter,,,,,oh by the way does anybody has a digagram they could e-mail me on this if this is and electrical prob...that way i can fix it myself and maybe help somebody else that has this happen to them,,,,,,thanks again tony,,,,, love my mystic svt

There is a gear that goes bad on the back of the cluster in the 96-98's. It typically happens around 140k. Happens to every one of them. Dallas Mustang knows which gear it is, and how to repair it. Give them a call.

Very common failure on 90's Mustangs and other Fords with elctro-mechanical odometers - fairly cheap and easy to fix though:
