My new engine specs...

I finally found my print out of what I know went into my engine. This engine was a purchased remanufactured 351w 1989, then brought to a performace shop - I basically told the guy as much performance to this engine while using the stock heads (for now) for the amount of money I wanted to spend.

9.5:1 Compression
Flattop KB151 Pistons
Melling timing
ACL Rings
Springs (Heads)
Melling Cam (I have the specs but not sure which numbers you'll need)
Have to use a 3K stall converter

adv. duration 290 - 300
at.50 duration 214 - 224
Lift 472 - 496
C/L .112
Degree Int. to .107

Can someone explain to me the cam numbers -what they mean?

i have basically the same cam but it's a speed pro, specs are the same though and i don't need a 3k stall. right now it has a stock converter but it definitely could use a little more stall. the speed pro catalog says this is the largest cam with stock converter. i'd say a 2200-2500 stall would be about right and i may have to get one later after i get the ac hooked up but we'll see then

I also agree, you don't need a 3000 stall speed converter with that cam. It's basically an RV type grind. I ran one with the same specs in a stock 400M with a stock C6 and it did fine with the stock converter.

Thanks for the input. How do you guys like the cam? Any complaints? My only concern was if it is going to idle OK for street use.

Bnickle - How do you llike your setup? Looks like you and I are pretty close to having the same engine (for the most part that is) Are you happy with the power you are making with your combo? You running stock heads? Got any sound clips of what your cam sounds like? Man o Man.. the questions...

That cam grind will have a somewhat choppy idle, not a lopey idle. Somewhere between stock and lopey. Sorta like the Crane Energizer in my 68 Merc's 390. You can only tell it's a hotter than stock cam when the engine's cold. Once it warms up, it smooths out. That Melling sounds like a big cam from the advertised duration, but the @.050 specs tell a different story. The lift specs are also in line with an RV type grind. But if you want that "big cam sound" that's not the cam for you.

I'm not looking for ONLY a loopy sound - i'd like some performance gains as well. Loopy sound is just a benefit. So I guess what you guys are saying though, is that this isn't as "wild" as a cam as the engine builder made it out to be. A 2-2500 stall would work for me, instead of the suggested 3K stall. Good info on this board as always..

Your cam specs match the one Ford racing listed for the Windsor. This is what they listed about it: Increased HP & Torque at all rpms, Good all around performance. Ford Part # M-6250-A332. It also show no overlap at .050, so it should build good cylinder pressure in your motor. Maybe even to the point where you miay need more octane than 87 or backing off the ignition timing some to control pinging. If you have the heads off and they're iron, now would be a good time to polish the chambers and remove any sharp edges there to prevent detonation.
