theres already a pic of it in the thread of oblivion, but heres two more of my new hatch. Just picked it up yesterday. I bought it from a friend down the street that is moving to Oklahoma and cant take it with him. He got it about 6mo ago and I have been helping him iron out all the bugs in it so I am already pretty familiar with its quirks. Right now it has a surging idle that I am working on. Now that its mine and can do as I please with it I am sure that I will have it all ironed out by this weekend. Anyway here's a couple of crappy cell phone pics.

87. its all stock except for some mickey mouse CAI. I am going to try and find a stock airbox to put on it. not sure if I am going to keep it so I want to make sure everything is original or as close to original as possible.

those are leaves in the second picture above the blue oval, not rust

aight guys i keep getting a code 85. says im running lean. i have a searching idle too. the motor as far as i know is stock. i put a 65mm tb on it because i knew the IAC on that was good, but no help there. i am working through the surging idle checklist, but does anyone know what could lean it out. it has a pretty gnarly exhaust leak, could that do it?

Any exhaust leak after the O2 sensors won't affect the way it runs, as the ECM won't know (or care) what happens to the exhaust gases after they pass the O2's. Run through JRichker's surging idle checklist and see if any of those items turn up anything. I'd start with the basic stuff like checking for vacuum leaks (inspect each and every inch of hose or plastic line), cleaning the EGR valve, and cleaning all of your electrical grounds. If it's still speed density, my money's on it being a vacuum leak. The hose between the MAP sensor and the intake on my '86 GT 'vert was giving it fits and idling like crap until I found that the hose was dry-rotted and leaking; replaced that and it idled smoother than any car I've ever owned before or since.

I am sure its got a vacuum leak. would that cause it to lean out?

Yes. Also do the basics. Check the fuel pressure, change the fuel filter and so on. Do the 87s have the salt and peper shakers. I remember something about a mod thats supposed to be done for them but forgot.

And holy crooked tail pipes Batman!

yeah, it has those. things that have been changed
IAC
TFI
TPS
EGR
Fuel Pump
Fuel Filter

Dist was removed and engine reset to TDC. Timing set by timing light to ~14* thats where it seemed to run the best. with the searching idle it made it real hard to nail down the timing, but I am sure that once I go through and replace all the vaccum hose(much of it has been capped off) the thing will run like its supposed to.
Idle wont come down below 1krpms, but I am positive that is vacuum related. I am going to tackle that this weekend. Then there is the exhaust leak. damn thing pops and backfires like crazy off the drivers side.
the tails look like someone tried to make new edge tails fit. they look like crap and stock fox tails are going on when I find a set.

well idle no longer surging, but it still sits at 1K RPMS. there are only 3 lines coming off the vacuum tree. i am almost positive that the vacuum bulb on the driver side fender has been removed. gonna put one on this weekend and see if that helps
