ive been having alot of tapping problems...i called the old owner and he said his friend advanced the timing for power.i see its on lkike 20 w/the spout out and like 25 wit it in maybe even more...you think this is my tapping problem?
oh i put a 160 therm and constant fan too.i cant see the numbers good or i would have changed the timing,,gotta clean the pulley

if i dont use the a/c it dont ping much.unless its under a load then it pings alot.as soon as the a/c goes on ping ping ping and if i drive it gets crazy hot w/a/c on..but.....i can sit at idle w/the a/c on all day and the temp wont go over 160..
the motor has 50k on it....it has shorty headers,pullies,flows,4.10s shift kit,2600 stall,k n air
i scaned it few times and never has any codes.

I would say you need to clean it up and get a good shot at what your seeing...20 with spout out is crazy....must be pinging like a mofo... :bang:

160 is way to cool for the motor....it needs to get to temp for the sensors to read correctly...otherwise it will run like chit...Is the car still stock motor wise??

Good luck witht the pinging...its a demon with SOME cars...Mine happened to be one...I never did have luck curing it, and i tryed alot chit too...anyway, clean it up and verify the timings were it should be 10-14 is a good place to start...the pinging will tell you when its to much...although there can be all sorts of stuff "pinging related" to check out...

Im the polar opposite of you..i run the stock 192 stat..it'll max out at 204 on the hottest days....runs just fine right there...to each his own i guess...

let us know how the timing thing pans out for you....50k is jack for milage, but take a good look at the balancer that things look cool...no rubber sticking out or lopesided...thats a sign the balancer could have moved, throwing off what you see timing it, or alot rubber out of place could mean its gonna take a dump real soon.... :bang:

good luck....

if the pulley looks wobbley while your timing it does that mean it may be bad?
its wobbly as hell..but when i grabed and twisted it felt stable and not loose..
is it suppose to look smooth when it spins?
it looks scary...i thought it was definitly loose when i flashed the light on it

Sounds like you may have a stank balancer???...and yes..it should run true...wobblings not good... :bang:

Thsi is a stank one for sure...your rubber may not be sticking out like this loser at 104k...but it may have dryrot/cracked rubber inner ring....

hey my balancer looks different than that

it looks like two pullies together but the inner pulley is thicker and looks as if it was cut on the ends so its stright not round..kinda looks like this U
almost like as if you have a circle and cut the roundness off both sides.

If you're timing is that high I would say it is definitely too much, if you haven't yet though jack up the car and put a mark on the 10 and 20 degree lines with some whiteout so you can make sure you are reading it correctly with the timing light. I just changed my balancer last week, I bought a stock replacement from the Ford dealer it was around $100, the parts stores have some cheaper ones but I didn't want to risk it, the Ford one lasted me 10 years the first time that's good enough for me. It's not a bad job once you hunt down the puller and installer tools..at least in my case seemed like every store I went to had them rented out took me two days to find them, should only take a couple of hours to do. I'm not sure if it's what you're talking about but the crank pulley is attached to the balancer so it would look like two pulleys together. Heres how my balancer looked once it came out

ok gus this is weird man..
i cleaned my pulley....i pulled the spout and it was at 10 degrees...how do you know if its btdc .is there an atdc?after top dead center?dumb ques?

anyway i kicked it up to like 14,and the idle smoothed out nice..no tapping or anything...even when i kicked it up to 20 or a little over it didnt tap...

oh ???it was at 10deg..i put it to 14 it smoothed idle and reved a little higher,,when i went over 14 the idle got sloppy again and slowed back down..all the way thru to 22 dbtc

is it possible that the timing was too slow causing my engine to heat from rich fuel or something?

i didnt drive it w/the a/c on yet..thats when she really tap dances like a hoe

Check the pic...you'll notice ATC.....0.....BTC. look at the left or ATC side, it goes to like 10 then the "hatch" marks for the numbers stop....look at the BTC side...the goes up to 40 I believe....if you can read lets says 14..then you BTC...get it??? You can crank the timing way up and ya, it'll take it...but you will lose power to...theres an optimum here....hence you go over the 14 or so and you can hear the motor going south...thats to much timing....you could set it at 20 and it may even sound decent...then go road test it...powers gonna be way off and she'll ping under the lightest throttle load...

you should get it to temp when setting the timing, colds not good...set it to like 14 then road test...lug it down to 35 in 4th...then punch it....whats it do??? if it pings...to much timing...head back, re-set it to 12...road test...find the sweet spot....i could never go above 10 without pinging....this is a starter test for pinging...there may be other factors that will cause it, but timing can be a biggie...search around here and Corral...tons of info on the subject...there are sensors that play into this, carbon build-up on the pistons, state of tune/dirty Maf and filters, shift retard, all kinds of chit...

When you put the AC on it throws a load on the motor...thats why it sounds off... :bang:

I tryed em all and got nada...mine finally went away when i swapped the heads....I cant get it to ping now...go figure???

THANKS RIO

i understand now..in the morning i better bring my timing light a nd wrench with me on the way to work :D cause i havent tested it yet...
its p s ing me off so bad..it pings even at 1800 rpms.and the engine never goes over 180 from my 160 therm and constant fan...when its under the slightest load.
i gotta break down and get a manual and admit i dont know as much as i think.the 20 $isnt gonna bankrupt me.

First, call the previous owner and bit** them out for advancing the timing so much. Second, put the stock 192 stat back in, it was put thare from the factory for a reason. Cooler is not better when it comes to combustion temps. Third, replace the balancer because it could have sliped and it is giving you false readings. And the final step, check timing and set it at 10* btdc and leave it. If it doesent ping then take it up alittle(I mean 1-4*)

hahaha
i did call him yesterday!!
i gave it to him for ten minutes straight!
the mofo brought me a dozen roses after he sold me the car the next day..
i said well at least your nice after you f somone..
he was trying to get evry little piece of power from this poor car w/out spending much money ..he did drop like 6 grand in parts and stuff..but stupid stuff like advancing the timing so much you cant use the a/c or drive the car more than 20 minutes is dumb!
believe me..my combustion temps arent cool..for some reason you cant even touch the intake manifold...if you put hot water in the windshield wiper resivoir you could make coffee w/the hot ass water that comes out...its so hot it burns the dirt from the windshield!!
