Hello Everyone! Major newbie here, but happy to be a part of this community! My issue...is with the shifter. I have a 2010 GT Mustang with the V8 315 HP with a 5 speed manual transmission. The problem is MYSTERIOUS so I'm hoping one of you can provide some insight. Shifting under normal driving conditions is absolutely fine. The problem shows up when I start pushing the car hard, getting the RPM's close to red line and possibly doing some hard braking. After a few minutes of this the car becomes very difficult to shift and sometimes after I've come to a stop at a light and go to put the car in 1st, the shifter will completely lock me out (I can't put the knob into 1st). In these cases, I have to turn the car off, restart ignition and usually I can shift again. I'll go so far as to say that the car definitely becomes harder to shift when running the RPM's high. One time, I took it to the drag strip for a few fun runs and it would fight me when I shifted into 3rd. Any thoughts are much appreciated! -Dan

Common issue. Transmission is flexing causing you not to be able to shift. Get poly mounts and or an upgraded shifter

Thank You! I searched around for transmission mounts for the 2010 GT, but couldn't find anything (there were plenty of options for the 2011-2014 setup) Do you know what to get to reduce tranny movement for my car? Also, any recommendations on which shifter to get?

Danno89:

Welcome to StangNet.

The MT-82 shifter is attached to the body so when the engine 'torques' (twists) the shifter becomes "unaligned" with the transmission. Aftermarket shifters like MGW, Barton, Steeda, Hurst, etc. are available. Blowfish Racing offers a bracket to isolate the shifter from the body and, by all reports, it works very well. Another issue is the helper spring in the clutch pedal assembly (just remove it). The helper spring tends to let the pedal stay at the floor at high RPM and you have to pull it up with your toe! Removing the spring stiffens up the pedal but it is not much stiffer than stock and it feels 110% better than stock. Run some searches here and you will be rewarded with tons of info about the benefits of short-throw shifters and links on how to remove the helper spring.

HTH,

Chris

Hello Danno89,

Have you brought this up to your dealer’s attention? Your service manager is in the best position to ensure a proper diagnosis, and will be able to provide available options and/or coverage for any work needed. Also, remember most repairs done at a Ford Dealer come with a 24 months/unlimited miles warranty.

You can schedule an appointment online here.
