Do I need this? It doesn’t seem to be affecting anything

That button is for the seat belt. It's got something to do with the inertia switch that locks the belt in an accident. Pretty important to me.
 
I don't remember how I fixed mine, long time ago, I think I swapped the button, hit effects the seat belt return I think, I'll do a little investigating. I do remember it was a total pain to deal with at the time.

Better to get the 90 and newer style replacements and just plug it, the 79-89 is a pita lol. You can buy the retainer clip from the link I posted but he still needs the button that holds that spring that no one makes.
