Both the front and rear bumpers on my Mystic need to be repainted due to clear coat peeling. I may also have the side skirts repainted due to scratches. A guy locally that I know well and does quality work gave me an estimate of $1000 for just the bumpers. The Ford dealer quoted me $750 for the bumpers. I know the local guy would do it right, but saving $250 would allow me to do the side skirts as well. I know either place plans on removing the bumpers to paint, so overspray and such will not be a big deal. The local guy has painted Mystic once or twice before, not sure about the dealer but I do believe a few Mystics have had some work done there. Any advice on which to use? Thanks.

So your saying that the dealer was cheaper than the local guy? If thats the case I would just go there since they would probably have more experience with the mystic style paint and if something goes wrong it would probably be easier to get them to redo it unless the local guy you are talking about is actually a reputable shop and not some guy who does it out of his garage or something like that.
Yeah like you said they are going to have to take off the bumpers to prevent over spray especially the front bumper because good body specialists don't want to risk getting paint spray all over the radiator and such.

dealer unless the guy really knows how to lay mystic down. A buddy put mystic flames on his car (he's a painter and did it himself) and says its not easy to match to existing paint.n Plus its was something like $600 a quart a couple of years ago when he did his, cant imagine its gotten any cheaper since then so really wouldnt want to have it done incorrectly.
$400 a quart for the paint. The local guy owns his own shop, my brother worked there and they do excellent work, just not much experience with mystic. He has done it a few times, but not recently. I think the dealer is the way to go, just afraid it isn't gonna be done right. They did charge labor for removing parts, so it should turn out well. I am thinking about the side skirts, how much more labor would be involved there (trying to keep total less than $1000)? Thanks.

+1 for the dealer. I work for a Ford Dealership and if they eff it up they will have to fix it. And yea i'd take the bumpers and side skirts off first.

I'm sure you already know this, and definatly if your brother worked there, but just in case...
My experience is, you go to some shops, and you ask a question like, "Hey, can you fix the paint on my Cobra? It's got the Mystic paint on it." They'll look at it, see it's color changing, and say "Yeah, I dun da mystic paint befo. I can do it, but it's espensive" because they want your business, but they may not realize it's not just some ricer bling bling color changing paint.
The Ford Mystic paint is a secret formula... I've heard all these stories of a Ford rep coming out with exactly how much paint you need, overseeing the whole job, and leaving with everything that was left over.
So yeah, for this, I'd say go to the dealer.
And then post pics of your car, cuz I love that ****.
The dealer sounds like the way to go, you guys have supported my belief in that. I know the local guy does quality work, but not sure about the dealer. However, if it isn't right and I can for sure get it redone, not harm in going to the dealer. Here are some pics for those who are interested:

Doesn't matter how you get the paint anymore. Once you contact BASF corporate about finding a regional sales rep for BASF in your area, you can go about proving you have the Mystic cobra, then he will authorize a BASF dealer close to you to sell you the paint. You decide how much you want, Pint, quart, or gallon....
I purchased a gallon, which is sitting next to me right now. $1,470.00! Its not cheap, but getting cheaper slightly. The paint isn't restricted anymore, its just not available through anyone but BASF because they still keep the formula secret.
It won't take a gallon to paint the car, but I will certainly have enough paint to fix the car if anything ever happens to it. I am also painting my interior panels to resemble what Saleen did in 2001 with the color matched door cups, radio bezel, shifter bezel, and guage bezel. I am also adding the Steeda race wing to the car and having the factory wing repainted and then putting it away.

Well, several months back I took the plunge and had it painted. I took it to Ford, they seem to have done good work. I ended up having both bumpers, the hood, and both side skirts done for $1300 after taxes and all, which I think was pretty decent. Haven't had to use it thankfully, but the do offer the lifetime warranty on their work, so I should be set. Thanks to those who helped me with the decision.
