N/A vs. supercharged

i got a another question to bug you guys with

alright a low compression 383 with a intercooled procharger

or a N/A 418

alright would either of these run off of 93 octane fuel?
(the procharger said anything that had lower that 9to1 compression ratio could run near 20lbs of boost intercooled on pump gas)
maybe a daily driver for a while(depends on my occupation after this summer)

which do you think would be the best to have.

i kinda like the 383 idea because i could run 87 till i got the money for the procharger and the motor may be able to find itself into my car faster.

but yeah i want to know your opinions on the matter :SNSign

mostly is the compression ratios with the larger displacent even with dished pistons i would still be over 9 to 1 displacement

how about....

a vortech (or other) 427 with methanol injection

Tuned/built right...it could easily run off pump gas and methanol is pretty cheap. You could use that only during the summer months if you really don't want to buy much of it.

That way, you have 427 lowend....with supercharged top end. You could even get it pullied to start making boost sooner if you wanted to.

of course...If I was to put a blower on anything 351 related...I would DEFINITELY get a dart block.

Why dart? 351 blocks are way stronger than 302 blocks and plenty of 302 even stroked are running boost.

me, I like knowing that what I have is reliable. Throw some AFRs, custom cam, good flowing intake, and then add boost to it....and I would think you're getting pretty close to a stock 351's block splitting level.

Could you get away with running all that on a stock block? Sure you could...and if tuned right it could last for a LONG time....But personally, I would like to be on the safe side.

also, if you wanted to throw a shot of nitrous on there....you wouldn't have to worry nearly as much.

On the bad side, however, those setups are some SERIOUS coin...especially after you beef the tranny, rearend, etc. up.

Go N/A....use the supercharger money on a really good balance job for the rotating assembly and some titanium valvetrain stuff and mechanical lifters and wind that bad boy up. Theres nothing like the sound of a big motor at 7500 rpm....

Yep, I hear ya.

I happen to be a person who did lots of research on the 351 block you are speaking of. With a steel crank I can run 520+ rwhp safely, with a forged crank, ALOT more. Unless you are running more than 800+ HP, they are supposed to be good pretty high up there the pre 74 blocks especially you could run all that and more. Any year 351 block is far far superior to the 302 blocks and the pre-1974 have even more metal and webbing in them.

Where did you get your information on the block spliting level of a 351? Just curious.

thats one of the main reasons am so set on a 351w combo. i believe that i would be well worth the extra money and effort to get it done

i'm just not sure wat combo i want to go with...what kind of compression can i run if i use methanol and how quickly is the stuffed consumed

No factual information...sorry.

but most people that I know that run 351 based engines claim that they are good up to around 750-800 hp. Again, I honestly don't know ANYONE that has split a 351 block.

Now, your information is probably much more reliable than mine since you did a lot of research on it. I'm sure you noticed, too.....that the lil ol' 302 block is reallllly wimpy compared to a 351 block. That 351 block can hold a lot of power. However, I'm one of those people that try to do it once and do it right. Not saying that you can't run a high hp engine and have it be reliable on a stock 351 block I would just like to be able to expand. Say I have a good flowing HCI and a blower putting out a good amount of boost. If I was to want to add a shot of nitrous off the line...then on a stock 351 block...I'd be a bit worried.....even if the tune was dead on.

However,

Since the OP says he wants to run off 93 octane...I'm going to say this is going to be mainly a street application. In which case a stock block would more than handle that power. I'm sorry I took it to somewhat of an extreme and got a tad bit off topic.

I'm just saying that, if the money was there, Dart block would be the route I would take.

If the money isn't there and you aren't planning on having a balls to the wall motor......then a stock block will do you fine...but at least consider a forged crank. A little bit of insurance goes a long way

i do want an all forged rotating assembly that is a deffinant but i really dont see my creation goin over 650 rwhp i mean i would be EXTREMLY happy if it made it to that

what do you guys think a windsor based stroker with an intercooled procharger and a methanol kit would be able to put out and remain streetable and on 93 octane

and i have been reading on snow performance's site and i believe that may also be another deffinant.

cbarr300, I know exactly what you mean about the thirst for power. I used to think 300rwhp was enough. Now I want more. The main thing I wanted am missing is low end with that 5.0. That's why I am going 408. I could have gone forged crank to get the 750-800 but Ihad to linit the budget somehwhere so I'll have to be comfortable with 520rwhp or 650whp for a good while, lol.

As to meth injection..I do't know much about that. Ayone else?

I couldn't give you any horsepower estimates...but if you don't see you going over that 600hp mark....then you could stay forged. The only reason I said anything about dart is because far too many times I've bought something....only to end up repurchasing it because the old one I bought wouldn't keep up with my demands.

Just get a clear goal of what you want from your car...and stick with it.

as far as the meth injection goes...I ran it on my combo in my sig (I'm about to put the meth kit back on...I went NA for a while and decided to put the blower back on) and I would DEFINITELY recommend it. You can up your timing a good bit with the meth...plus you'd have the intercooler to help out also. You can't go wrong for the price. You just have to mind your levels...which they have LEDs for that.

Meth can last for months or for days...all depends on how much you use it. Also, it'll lose it's novelty after a while and you won't be using it as much.

low compression, then boost later was my original plan when i was planning my 331 build. i also liked the idea of being able to run 87 octane while not boosted.

when i decided to go 410, i decided to stay n/a. for me, it's more about having something reliable that i don't have to mess with much or worry about, but also that has plenty of power. that is why i am going 410 n/a. i expect to see about 450 hp at the wheels, massive mid-range torque, and i will probably surprise a few corvettes.

and i will never have to worry about blowing a head gasget.

and +1 on the "it adds up fast" thing. but if you are careful and do your own work, you can get out of it without breaking the bank.

Yeah Dart blocks are great if you got the money!

The HP levels you are talking about a stock 351 block with good machine work and tune will be fine.
