I have an msd 6al and need a good ignition 12v also on electric choke does it need igntion or constant 12v? Where is a good vacum port for vacum secondery's on a Wiend Stealth?
Well, the vacuum secondaries are opened through the vacuum signal in the carb, so you don't have to worry about finding a vacuum port for that. The electric choke needs constant 12v to operate properly. On older cars, I usually grab the constant 12v source from the ignition switch. Use a voltmeter to determine where on the switch has power while the key is in the on position as well as in the start position.
Thanks fast. I figured that out after posting lol. The only port I need is for the PCV valve and I will just use the big port on the carb. I am using pro billet so no vacuum on the dist. It's been 4 years since I pulled the old motor out so I have forgotten a lot as I am putting things back together. Thanks again
As for the 12 ignition. Isn't one side of the starter relay 12 v ignition? Since I am running the MSD and it use to have Petronix I have several wires not being used. Also switch to a 1 wire alt so the three wires that was on the old alt near as I can tell will not be used right?
Yes, one side of the starter solenoid is a 12v source, but if you attach anything to it, it's getting juice all the time because the positive battery cable runs directly to it, and if you do that, your battery will drain and it's probably not good for your components either. You can test any of your old wires for 12v juice and if any of them have juice only when the key is turned on and also during starting, then it is fine to use any one of them. I am not sure how the 1 wire alt. swap goes, but if you know how to run the 1 wire, and it does not involve the 3 original ones, then yes the other 3 will just not be used. Good luck!
Not one "side" of relay, but one of the "front" wires is ignition, the one closer to the firewall. You can check, it should have 12V with the ignition switch ON. You'll need (or have) 12V ignition for your MSD, too. Usually, the resistor wire is cut out and replaced with standard wire out to the MSD box. If you use a small terminal somewhere near the firewall, then I think you can split it there and run one wire to the MSD and the other to the coil. Sound right?
