Well i took the upper and lower plenum. and i think i figured what was the rattling. it was the x shaped things the keep the lifters in place, the thing that holds down the x's were loose!!!!!!! I remember bending that piece to get the x things in there, and never bent it back far enough. cuzing them to move around. were can i find a new? do yo think that was the rattling noise?

why bend it when all you have to do is remove the two bolts?

i wouldn't try to bend it back, you can probably get one at a parts store but they'll probably have to order it

no we did remove the two bolts, but when we were puting back on it we couldn't put the things back on there. so we bent it around to make it fit then we bolted that piece on with the x's on the already. whats that piece called?

I believe it is called the lifter retainer plate...or something like that...I always called it the dog bone holder.

The piece that holds the lifter retainers is called the spider. If your cam siezed becuase a lifter rotated, your cam could be totally fubar'd. You need to pull the cam and check it out and again, you NEED to pull your heads.

I second all that has been said above

The spider is supposed to be under tension.

Basically you hold it down with one hand while starting one of the bolts with the other hand thus it stays under tension after both bolts are tightned.

If you bent it, you most likely took all the tension away and as John said, you may have had one of your rollers on a lifter rotate in the hole and that would surely have wrecked your cam and filled your motor with metal shavings.

I wanna make sure you saw the word may I used to show what possibly could have happened

Check things out real good and I wish you the best of luck

Here is the first thing that comes to mind you might wanna check
Look at the drain plug as it is magnetic IIRC.

If you see signs of the cam/dizzy gear chewed up
OR
A trashed cam lobe/lifter
OR
ANY kind of nasty looking places where it is evident, metal to metal contact has been going on ............

btw ... didn't you say you had some loud knocking happening?

If you see that kind of thing, that most likely was the source of the knocking.

Then ................

Look in the bottom of the pan for shavings.

Split apart the oil filter to see any sighs of the shavings.

It would be a good idea to check and see if any shavings have embedded themselves in the cam, rod, or main bearings.

I'd also check inside the oil pump.

If you find any shavings ..........

The only way to know for sure is tear it down to see how bad it is.
