I have a 96 GT and have started to hear a noise coming from under the car. The squeaking noise is constant when I accelerate from a stop and through second gear. It is not as noticeable in third and fourth, but is still there. It seems to only occur when I press down on the gas. My mechanic first thought it was my wheel bearings. $50 later it seems that wasn’t the case. He now thinks its my drive shaft, however.... He puts the car on a lift and accelerates the engine, spinning the tires. No noise! But when you run the car on the street the noise is there. So I guess I am really looking for all your thoughts. And if it is the drive shaft why wouldn’t the noise be there while it was on the lift? Sorry so long, but I appreciate the advice.

Is it a continuous squeak like your brakes are dragging, or an intermittent "chirp" like it’s catching a high spot on something?

You have to remeber that when you put a car on the lift you are unloading the suspension and also changing the pinion angle of the driveshaft. If the noise is related to either one of these it can come and go while you load and unload the car.

So are we in favor of it maybe being the drive shaft?

Which end of the car is it coming from? Front, back, middle, left, right? As much info as possible please.

Sounds like it is coming from middle. Its a chirping sound that increases upon acceleration. I would hate to put a new driveshaft in if not needed. I am on my second mechanic now and they are still trying to figure it out.

Is it a manual? I'm guessing the throwout bearing has gone south, which is very common. If it is a manual, push the clutch in a bit when it starts to squeal, and see if it gets any better or worse.

Yes its a manual. There really isnt a squeal, its more of a chirp which increases with speed. My mechanic said that there was some play in the draveshaft so that was kind of the direction I was going.

check the exhaust pipes, especially the tailpipes. Under load, Ive had two cars rub up against different parts of the car, making different sounds. On a stand, the pipes will hang free, but under load, they can move a bit.

Yes... When I push down on the clutch the sound goes away. When I let off the clutch it chirps pretty bad. The faster I go, the more it "chirps."

OK.. OK.. I guess I should have looked at the other posts first. Everyone seems to be having this problem with the throwout bearings. Thanks all.
