Hello all. I got a hard question that needs answered....
Went to a local swap meet and bought a 4 barrel carb that SUPPOSELY came off a 66 mustang gt. The car was a 289/271 with a 3 speed standard tranny. My question is the tag attached to the carb reads C3AF BY and under that A 4AB(?) I have looked in all my mustang books and cant find jack squat with those numbers...... Can anyone help? Im not looking for it to match my 66 289/271 but it would be nice to know what these carb came off of since it has NO provisions for a choke. THANKS

What is the engineering number stamped on the side of the left front toe? Also by the clock face, is it 1.06, 1.08, 1.12, or 1.19?

I may be wrong but I don't think the 289 Hi-po ever had a 3 speed manual transmission behind it.

You are correct, sir.

The "C3" betrays the tag, at least, as being a 1963 item. Look on the left front corner of the mounting flange for the number.

C3AF BV is a 1963 4100 1.12 carb with automatic choke.

I can't remember where I saw it, but I remember some documentation that showed the 271 engine available with a 3-speed stick. I will have to try and remember where I saw it. As for the tag, no HiPo carbs had an A in the 3rd character, only O and Z.

This carb will not function on a 289 properly, I know, I have tried. The secondaries will open very late or not at all on a 289. This would need to be re-calibrated by someone who know Autolite 4100's Only people I know of are Pony Carbs but it will cost you and he will try and talk you into a 1.08 instead of your 1.12. He's right about the CFM unless you have a very modified 289. If you don't believe me, just check out my other post "347 dyno results". That engine was not carb limited with a 650 and is running 97% efficient with a ton of cam. He does have his crazy opinion about timing and I think he is all wet but that's my opinion. Every one is entitled to his own
